DEA Suspends McMurray Doctor's Registration

Dr. Oliver Herndon can continue to practice, however he can no longer write prescriptions for controlled substances.

Tuesday morning, federal law enforcement officials—including the Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI—executed a federal search warrant at 1000 Waterdam Plaza in McMurray—the office of Dr. Oliver Herndon.

The immediate suspension order suspends the doctor's DEA registration, according to Pittsburgh DEA assistant Special Agent Gary Davis.

Herndon can no longer legally write prescriptions for controlled substances (narcotics), which include Vicodin and oxycodone.

"He can still write prescriptions for antibiotics and heart medication," Davis said.

"He can apply to receive a hearing in the next 30 days if he so desires," he continued. "We applied the suspension order because we believed there was a threat to public health and safety."

Last Monday, Herndon's office staff was held at gunpoint. The man entered the medical building and walked directly to the back of the office demanding money from a female employee of Herndon's, Peters police said.

The man fled empty-handed and hasn't been identified by police.

Peters police declined to comment how or if today's action relates to last week's incident.

Dr. Herndon is a very reputable physician who happens to have a lot of patients who are seriously ill and/or in pain, whether they "appear" to be or not. The DEA was informed by pharmacists who said they saw patients who according to at least one report,"appeared to be able bodied" presenting with prescriptions for narcotic medications. Some pharmacists discriminate based on their own social biases, which is sad, because it is the patients who need the medication most who suffer when pharmacies refuse to fill prescriptions based on perception of the doctor or patient. Additionally, many people are temporarily "able-bodied" only because they are on pain medication.
I believe eventually the truth will prevail and Dr. Herndon will be cleared. He's a family man of faith who took good care of my family and made house calls when few if any docs would--and there were no controlled substances involved. Dr. Herndon is in a very unique situation being a PCP, licensed in pain management and palliative care with patients who were also coming from or going to nursing homes or hospice. Getting care in one place (instead of running from the PCP to Pain Management) was convenient for his patients and provided continuity of care. I believe this doctor has been unjustly accused, and the other side of the story needs to be told.

Dr. Herndon, was the Director of Horizon Hospice. As a director I would expect him to respond to any needs of the Hospice Patient's he was responsible for, But it was a known fact to the nurses they were not allowed to disturb him for emergencies or whatever .Please explain how a wonderful Dr. would do this.

Dr. Herndon was a briliant physician but he let money become his mistress. I know for a fact that he would stop at nothing to make money. Too bad the patients are now suffering from his lack of morals.

Dr. Herndon is An extremely Caring and knowledgeable Dr. hes the best doctor I ever had in 20 years, He Listened to me without interrupting and then came up with the best treatment plan for me, He Examined me thoroughly and explained everything. I dont understand why the DEA is destroying this good mans name, Family and Livelyhood. All the DEA is doing by harassing these doctors is making EVERY doctor out there afraid to write pain medicine and have the docs constantly looking over their shoulder. Its just making it tougher and tougher for people in REAL pain to get treatment for pain, but yet they continue to let the Illegal drugs like Heoin flood into this country. Its easier to go down the street and get a bag of illegal drugs like heroin than it is to get pain medicene for a legit problem, whats wrong with this country??
