Arm and train every teacher in the building on how to defend their classroom.

Couldn't of said it better Tom. Teachers need to be armed and trained. Guns aren't the problem, it's the security in the schools. How did that idiot get in with 2 pistols? That's the question. Can't wait to hear the comments on gun control. Love kids and was in tears watching the news

My heart goes out to the students and families of the victims. This is truly a tragedy and one that will not be forgotten.
I truly believe security neefs to be raised in all if our schools. Whether it be armed guards, metal detectors, etc. Our schools are supposed to be a safe place for our children. Lets make it so.

I had a minor issue a few weeks back and then a drug bust across the street from my sons canon mcmillan school. I have already advised the school this could happen and we needed an officer at the schools like other schools have. I have a criminal justice degree and have studied alot about this stuff. They told me it isn't necessary at canon mcmillan. IT IS NECESSARY!!! WE ALL SAW THE NEWS TODAY!!! Everyone please for our babies sakes ......push this. I can't get it alone. I can't fight this battle alone. if there is an officer there on staff he/she can detain these people when they start a disturbance before it gets to the point of today. It would also deter it from happening in general. Do something people. Plan to go to the school board, start a petition, something to push this. Secure our schools!!!

I agree there should be at least one security person during school hours patrolling and ready for a situation such as this!

Sadly, the gunman was let in because he was recognized as one of the teacher's children. An officer and a metal detector so that weapons cannot enter the schools.

I firmly believe the first stage of security begins with having ALL entry points into the schools locked at all times so they are inaccessible to outsiders. These doors should still be able to open from the inside in the event of an emergency. Next, require all visitors to wait in the office or lobby. Install some sort of silent alarm system in the office and all classrooms. This obviously won't prevent the attacker from gaining access if he/she really wants to do harm, however, it can speed up the notification time, thus speeding up police response. This may or may not reduce the number of victims, but it wouldn't hurt. I am not against the idea of having an armed police officer patrolling the schools. I am a bit weary about arming teachers and staff, because of the potential that a student could possibly access the gun and an accident could occur.

My daughter is a mental health therapist and has to enter school for observations and even though they have locked doors she gets buzzed in just from saying who she and why she is their with no one asking for any form of identification. the system has to change it can happen at any schools even ours.

He wasn't let in because he was recognized as a teacher's son, he forced his way in, with the guns. Security at schools is important, perhaps even metal detectors for peace of mind. Some will say it's an inconvenience, but I feel it would be worth it. And the attitude, "not here at Canon McMillan " is what will come back to bite you because things are going on at Canon McMillan, just like everywhere else.

In my opinion, we are going to find out that this troubled young man was the subject of ridicule and bullying for being different. Along with a mental illness, this instability builds in these kids..... Why did he go to the school??? Perhaps it started in Kindergarten.. I am saddened for all involved. Their lives are forever changed.....I hope everyone hugs their kids a little tighter, a little longer
