YMCA Could Come to North Strabane by 2015

Township supervisors are expected to vote on a non-binding agreement with the YMCA next week.

A representative from the YMCA told North Strabane supervisors on Tuesday that a $12 million facility could be coming to the township by 2015.

"If not sooner," township Parks and Recreation Director Greg Sulc said Wednesday.

YMCA officials presented the township with a letter of intent in January, and the non-binding agreement is on the agenda for supervisors' consideration at their meeting next week.

If approved, Sulc said it would give the YMCA "the greenlight" to do a financial feasibility study for the project.

Officials from the organization told supervisors that they need to secure funding for the project—and that 60 percent needs to be acquired before construction could begin on the facility.

Estimated to be a $12 million to $14 million project, Sulc said it would be integrated into Muncipal Park, and that the amenities planned there would satisfy the second step of the township's master plan for recreation.

That second phase included the inclusion of a recreation center at the park, and the YMCA facility planned would not only offer that, but also a swimming pool, basketball courts, locker rooms and other features.

"This is something that not only benefits North Strabane residents but all of Washington County," Sulc said.
