Students from all over western Pennsylvania descended upon Upper St. Clair High School Saturday as the South Hills Junior Orchestra prepared for its spring concert. The upcoming event, led by Upper St. Clair's own Paul Fox, is fast approaching. The teens and pre-teens are rehearsing diligently for the concert scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, in the Upper St. Clair Theater. Fox took the orchestra through a repertoire of numbers, including Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, A Salute to Cinema, and Polestar, a piece written by William Critser, a fellow teacher and composer. Listen up, girls. Before you head to prom, ask your stylist for one of these romantic looks.
Forget fussy, unnatural up-dos, the area’s beauty experts agree bouncy, beachy waves, romantic braids—and even sleek ponytails—are the hot trends for this year’s prom hair. “It’s a lot softer and more natural,” said Tyler Emerick, a stylist at BeautyFirst in Cranberry. “It’s not as structured of an up-do as it has been in the past.” For this year’s prom, Emerick is forecasting braids as one of the top hairstyle trends—and he’s not talking about the tight schoolgirl braids or French braids of your youth, either. Instead, Emerick said this year’s braids are unstructured and soft. He predicts another top trend with girls will be blown-out hair worn down, but with lots of volume. Marian Davis, owner of Velvet Salon and Boutique in Harmony, …

Here's Perry Como’s 100th Birthday Celebration entertainment schedule; American Idol finalist Adam Brock and English singer Matthew Long will be among the entertainers.
This weekend, Canonsburg will be the focus of many music lovers here in town and throughout the world during the celebration of crooner Perry Como’s 100th birthday, appropriately entitled “Hot Diggity Dog Days.” The idea actually started a few years ago when the borough and Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce started getting phone calls from Como fans worldwide asking what the town was doing to celebrate. “Perry was an icon," said Nadeen Steffey, chairman of the festival and Canonsburg’s Main Street manager. "We’re so close to it here, we sometimes overlook it.” The town set the stage two years ago and invited people to come downtown for cake or cupcakes on May 18, the actual date of Como’s birthday. This year, in honor of Como’s 100th …

Try this shrimp scampi recipe if you're looking for a tasty and romantic dinner without a lot of preparation.
If you're looking for a tasty and romantic dinner without a lot of preparation, try this shrimp scampi recipe. The hardest part of the recipe is shelling and de-veining the raw shrimp you need to cook for this great meal. But it’s worth the work to enjoy an evening in without the cost of a restaurant. Heat the pan to medium-high and add olive oil and butter. When the butter melts, add garlic and to the mixture. Sauté for a minute or until the edges of the garlic begin to brown. When the garlic browns, add the raw shrimp into the pan. Then add the white wine and stir so the shrimp are coated in the butter, oil and wine. Spread the shrimp out in an even layer in the pan and increase heat to the highest setting, allowing the wine to boil …
