Every day, somewhere in the world, books are being written (probably not in their entirety, of course) and published. 

Books are ordered, shipped and delivered.

At your local library, a book might be ordered for one of a number of reasons...for instance, the non-fiction books Secret Florence and The Italian Table were both purchased to fulfill memorial requests. 

On the other hand, James Patterson is a "popular demand" kind of a guy—his novels (I, Michael Bennett and Guilty Wives, for instance) frequently have a reserve list as soon as they're released.
