This is a copy of the letter I sent to DEP Secretary Krancer addressing the unanswered concerns about water quality testing issues near Marcellus Shale drilling sites in Pennsylvania. Rather than engage in a meaningless exchange of non-answers, I have asked ten specific questions for the Secretary to answer.
You can see the letter by clicking on the attachment or by clicking here.
I want to be clear about this. Anyone who favors responsible development of Marcellus Shale should be demanding the highest levels of transparency and accountability from the DEP. Without a strong and fair DEP, the Marcellus boom will not have the long-term sustainability needed to generate the long-term goals of energy independence and economic benefits for the region.

Anyone who is concerned about their water, whether it be from gas drilling, natural causes of pollution, or anything other causes of pollution can install a whole home water purification system that would clean the water right before it enters your house. A lot of people around the country are installing these systems whether they rely on ground water or public water. Many of these people don't even live in areas that are being drilled. Anyone who is concerned about frack chemicals entering their wells should look at the recently released report from the EPA about how the water in Dimock, Pa. did get polluted. According to from what I got from it the fracking process did not pollute the water but the actual drilling process may have and that the water eventually cleared up. That's what led me to look at what can be done about this and I came across this idea about the purification system. I would suggest that the gas drillers install these systems on the people's homes in close proximity to the gas well, who use water wells as their water source, before they even start moving dirt . It would be a lot cheaper than a lawsuit filed later on.

Easy for you to say, Mr. Roessler, since you're cashing big checks from the gas industry. Are you willing to pay for water purification systems for everyone else???

Make sure you look at the video of the interview too. And no I won't pay for yours but I may take my gas money and install one in my own home even though our water was never polluted from the drilling. After researching them and seeing what other things can be found in our water from sources other than the gas drilling got me thinking about it. And if you read my last sentence, which you apparantly didn't, I said the gas driller should pay for it.

So true! Most private water wells do not meet EPA standards for drinking water. PA has no regulations and most people do not test their water unless there's a problem.

Interesting that Prouder American is afraid to use a real name. The story referenced was paid for by the Park Foundation. The Park Foundation numbers are a matter of a record and we have detailed the data numerous times including these posts:

The article you’re relishing was paid for by Park and is an attempt to deflect from a very serious issue – Park’s undeserved tax exemption as a charity when it’s really a political outfit. See below:

Prouder American

No, it wasn't. I got this right from the article.
The Center for Media and Democracy has received project grants from the Park Foundation that have allowed it to provide greater documentation of fracking issues, but this report was not funded or reviewed by the foundation. The analysis in this report reflects CMD's independent assessments as an expert critic of the techniques used in the field of public relations and propaganda. For nearly two decades, CMD has been a leading investigator of corporate-funded PR campaigns that affect our environment. Its most recent award-winning investigation is ALECexposed.org.
The author of this report, CMD's Executive Director Lisa Graves, received her J.D. from Cornell Law School, in Ithaca, New York. She previously served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice, as the Chief Counsel for Nominations for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, as the Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the U.S. Courts, and as an adjunct professor of law, among other posts.

So even though they say it isn't funded by Park and you have no proof otherwise, you just call them liars. Here's another nugget I pulled from the article:
"Beyond IPAA/EID, these include API (which has launched front groups called “Energy Citizens” and “EnergyNation”), the Marcellus Shale Coalition, the Ohio Shale Coalition, America’s Natural Gas Alliance, the Center for Liquified Natural Gas, energy Tomorrow, EnergyfromShale.org, energyNow!, EnergyAnswered, LNGfacts.org, SecureOurFuels.org, Oilindependents.org, the Consumer Energy Alliance, Vote4Energy.org, the American Energy Alliance (AEA), the Institute for Energy Research (IER), and others."
So doesn't that put you in the middle of a massive glass house, Tommy Boy?
Prouder American
6:38 pm on Sunday, December 30, 2012
But, wait- there's more!
"Some of these groups work together on campaigns. AEA, for example, joined in a bus tour with David Koch’s Americans for Prosperity (AFP) to influence voters about fracking under the jobs frame frequently spouted by Shepstone. Due to inadequate public disclosure requirements, however, it is difficult to know who helped fund that tour besides Koch through his financial support for AFP, which he helped found and helps lead. This is just one of many ways pro-fracking groups coordinate and amplify common messages. They have even had overlapping public relations staff, as with IPAA/EID's Chris Tucker, a former GOP congressional staffer who has been described as a Senior Vice President at Financial Dynamics, as the “managing director of FTI Consulting and as team lead for Energy In Depth.” For a time, Tucker was publicly listed as handling communications for both IPAA/EID and IER, “using the same phone number for both,” according to DeSmogBlog's research.
Of course, according to the leaked IPAA memo, one of the goals for EID was "coordinated messages."
But, Shepstone is relatively silent on such matters and on how his public messages help facilitate that goal."
Thomas Shepstone
5:13 am on Monday, December 31, 2012
We're not silent, like you. WE tell people exactly who we are on are website and we're proud of it. It's the Park Foundation that funds anti-gas junk science, funds groups to exploit that research, funds news outlets to report on it and then funds still others to accuse us of what it does. And, yes it funds PR Watch and money is fungible.
