Why Did You Vote Tuesday? Or Why Didn't You?

Tell us why you voted—or chose not to—in the primary election that included candidates for U.S. president and legislators, and key state offices.

What was it that kept voters from the polls Tuesday? The number of registered voters who came out to cast their ballots yesterday hovered at around 20 percent for both Allegheny and Washington counties. The dry and typically spring weather can't be blamed for the light voter turnout. So was it apathy? Being disenfranchised with the slate of candidates? Convinced it wasn't worth effort since Romney and Obama were 'going to win' the party nomination anyhow? Not worried about federal and state legislative offices? Unhappy with the tone of politics? In Allegheny County, which has 888,686 registered voters, a mere 19.34 percent turned out to cast their ballots, according to the county's Division of Elections website. Of those 171,916 voters, 37…

Maher Wins GOP Nomination For Auditor General

The Upper St. Clair Republican will face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale in the November general election.

State Rep. John Maher defeated Frank Pinto in the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania auditor general. "The voters declared today that Pennsylvania deserves an auditor for auditor general," Maher said during his victory speech at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bethel Park. Maher will face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale of York County in the November general election. DePasquale was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He grew up in Pittsburgh and is a Central Catholic High School graduate. "Remember this is an office which has only been won one time in 50 years by a Republican," Maher said. "We need about one million Democrats to win (the November general election) and I believe there are one million Democrats in the state who understand …

Romney Wins PA Primary

Critz defeats Altmire in congressional race, Raja wins bitter contest with Mustio for state senate.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had little trouble winning the Pennsylvania Republican primary for President of the United States, and his closest competitor was a man who is no longer in the race.  Romney finished with 57-percent of the vote, followed by former Sen. Rick Santorum at 19-percent. Santorum withdrew from the race earlier this month. Texas Congressman Ron Paul finished third with 13 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was last with 11-percent of the vote.  In the race for U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, incumbent Bob Casey of Lackawanna County easily defeated Joseph Vodvarka of Robinson Township, Allegheny County, by a four to one margin in the Democratic primary.  Vodvarka who spent the evening with his …

Unofficial Results Show Murphy Wins Congressional Race

Incumbent Tim Murphy beat Peters Township native Evan Feinberg in the race for Congress.

Five-time Republican incumbent Tim Murphy is on his way to a sixth term as representative of the 18th Congressional District. Murphy won a place on the ballot over challenger Peters Township native Evan Feinberg. Murphy will face Democrat Larry Maggi of Washington County in the November general election. Maggi currently serves as a Washington County commissioner. “We have so many good people here, I want to thank everybody,” Murphy said to supporters at Clarion Hotel in Green Tree on Tuesday evening. “What an army of people we had out there who were working hard all the time. Election 2012: Q&A With Auditor General Candidate Maher

State Rep. John Maher is also running unopposed in a re-election for his current House seat.

State Rep. John Maher (R-Upper St. Clair) is running for two offices this election. He's running unopposed for state representative of the 40th District—an office he has held since 1997. Maher is also seeking the auditor general seat currently occupied by Jack Wagner, who has reached his term limit. He will be squaring off against Frank Pinto of Harrisburg in the April 24 Republican primary. Maher or Pinto will move on to face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale of York County, who is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination as auditor general.
