Winter Weather Warning Runs Through 1 p.m.

Police report that Interstate 70 near Belle Vernon is closed because of icy conditions, but Washington County 911 reports only one accident countywide as of early Saturday morning.

A winter storm warning remains in effect through 1 p.m. today—and first responders warn motorists to be vigilant on icy roadways.

The Southwest Regional Police Department sent out an alert Saturday morning advising that Interstate 70 eastbound from Belle Vernon was closed to all traffic.

But a Washington County 911 supervisors early Saturday said that, countywide, there was only one minor accident in Charleroi, although the roads remain icy.

Canonsburg Public Works employee Dale Rhome said that while the crew had "a hell of a time last night," it was finally starting to get a break Saturday morning.

While roads are passable, he advised motorists to drive slowly and be carefully.

The National Weather Service said more rain and sleet is likely before 10 a.m., with a chance of snow between 10 a.m. and noon.

The high temperature today is expected to be 31 degrees, its website states.
