PennDOT, Local Police Announce Aggressive-Driving Enforcement

Tailgating.

Changing lanes without signaling.

Speeding.

North Strabane police Sgt. Dave Richards said they are all forms of aggressive driving, which, statistically, is responsible for more deaths than drunk driving.

And local police departments - as part of a statewide initiative - are partnering with the state Department of Transportation to try to put the brakes on these behaviors.

From now through Aug. 15, North Strabane, Cecil, Peters and South Strabane police will be taking part in an aggressive-driving enforcement initiative.

State Route 19 will be one of the roadways that both Peters and North Strabane police will target.

Police, as well as PennDOT spokesman Jay Ofsanik, said they hope the targeted enforcement will spur drivers to forego the behaviors that often lead to crashes.

"Hopefully it will get people thinking, 'I need to slow down,'" he said.

While people are aware of the dangers of drunk driving, Ofsanik said he hopes this initiative will shed more light on the dangers of aggressive driving.

Of the 29 deaths attributed to car crashes in Washington County last year, five were caused by aggressive driving, according to PennDOT.
