'Sister Act' Shines at the Benedum Center

This riveting production combines the plotline of the movie we've cherished for so many years with a few new twists, a whole lot of tasteful religious humor and a lot of laughs.

Simply put, “Sister Act” is one of the best musicals of the season. This riveting production combines the plot line of the movie we’ve cherished for so many years with a few new twists, a whole lot of tasteful religious humor and a lot of laughs.

Just like the film, “Sister Act” follows the story of Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring singer who watches her married boyfriend murder a man. She flees to the police where she meets the dashing Eddie Souther, or in this production, “Sweaty Eddie.” Eddie needs to find a place for Deloris to hide until the trial against her boyfriend, Curtis, comes around and the most inconspicuous place for a showgirl to hide is a convent.

Leading lady Ta’Rea Campbell is truly a shining star on the stage in the role of Deloris. Channeling her inner Whoppi Goldberg who originally played Deloris in the film, Campbell commands the stage with a powerful voice, true personality and whole lot of zingers.

Of course, she’s not the only star of the show because it’s truly a “Sister Act.” Starting with the leader, Mother Superior (Hollis Resnik), is truly a delight on stage with quite a few zingers herself! Add in the hilarity of our favorite characters such as Mary Robert (lael Van Keuren), Mary Patrick (Florrie Bagel), Mary Lazarus (Diane J. Findlay), Mary Martin of Tours (Wendy James) and Mary Theresa (Karen Elliott) – the film comes to life on stage from the quarky off-key songs to the powerful solos and a few surprises.

Of course, this production isn’t all about the ladies. “Sister Act” shines with the amazing male leads like Curtis Jackson (Kingsley Leggs) and his band of miscreants Joey (Todd A. Horman), Pablo (Ernie Pruneda), Pablo (Charles Barksdale) and TJ (Jackson Simon).
