Obituary: Verna McKenery, Lifetime Canonsburg Resident

Oct. 10, 1924 - Jan. 11, 2013

Verna McKenery, 88, of Canonsburg, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013 at the Retirement Village of North Strabane.

She was born in Canonsburg Oct. 10, 1924 , a daughter of the late William and Zetta Clyde McLhinney. Verna was a graduate of Canonsburg High School, class of 1943.

She was a lifetime member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star Chartiers Chapter 97 of Canonsburg, Jefferson College Historical Society; Woman's Auxiliary Canonsburg Hospital and did volunteer work at Canonsburg General Hospital. Verna worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company, The Meadows and Western Center.

On July 2, 1948 she married William L. "Beans" McKenery. Her beloved husband of 49 years died June 6, 1998. Surviving are two sons, David Douglas McKenery and wife Jane Martello of Canonsburg and William O. McKenery and wife Penny of Leander, Texas; one daughter, Deborah McKenery of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, William McLhinney of Hermitage and James McLhinney of Baltimore, Maryland, two grandsons, David McKenery, Jr. and wife Rebecca Stoner, and Ryan McKenery; two great granddaughters, Paige and Maren McKenery; three step-children Victoria and Behrens Keeler and Kyntra Yates of Texas, several nieces and nephews and close cousin, Verna Galbraith and life-long friend Peggy Emery.

Deceased are two sisters, Elise McLhinney and Lena McClelland. She will be missed by all who were touched by her kindness and love.

Visitation is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Sollon Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 East College Street in Canonsburg.

Funeral will be held at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at funeral home, followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. at Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Douglas Beltzner officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
