Canonsburg Council to Expand Civil Service Commission

Here's what happened at this week's council meeting.

Canonsburg Borough Council will add three alternate members to its Civil Service Commission, which is responsible—among other things—for screening applicants for the police department.

Alternates recommended for the board include Anthony L. Colaizzo, Robert Jeffrey Smith and David A. DeLuca, borough Manager Terry Hazlett said.

Council is expected to approve the appointments at its voting meeting Monday, along with the appointment of Councilman Rich Russo to the Parks and Recreation Board.

Council will also consider an appointment to the Canonsburg-Houston Joint Sewer Authority to fill out the term of Robert Luksis, who has resigned.

In other business, council President John Bevec appointed Councilmen Peter Lucas and Councilwoman Pat Romano to join him on a committee to discuss the Canonsburg-Houston Joint Authority leaseback agreement. The agreement affects the authority’s ability to finance expansion of the waste water treatment plant, Hazlett said.

Council also may consider a proposal for a real estate transfer ordinance that would permit the borough to inspect homes upon being sold to ensure they have not been altered into multi-units.

The board also gave Jordan Tax Service permission to “go to the next step” to ensure residents are paying their waste removal bills.

Council meets next at 7 p.m. Monday. The meeting will be held in council chambers at the borough building and is open to the public.
