Free Tax Preparation Available

See if you qualify for the help!

State Rep. Brandon Neuman will host free tax preparation assistance at his office for residents in the 48th Legislative District—which includes Canonsburg and North Strabane—starting Feb. 6 and continuing every Wednesday through the month.

“This free tax service will be provided by a local tax professional with no cost to the taxpayers,” said Neuman, D-North Strabane. “Many people in the community visited my office last year to get help filing their state taxes and I’m happy to continue providing the service again this year.”

Neuman said appointments are required, and can be made by calling his constituent service office at 724-743-7602.

The office is located 1825 Washington Road in North Strabane Township.

He said people should bring all tax information with them, including W-2 forms, interest and dividend statements, retirement income statements and property tax bills.

The service is for state tax forms only—it does not include federal taxes. State and federal taxes must be mailed by April 15.

Neuman added that help also will be available to complete forms for the state Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

The program benefits income-eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people with disabilities who are 18 or older. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for senior homeowners with lower incomes can boost the property tax or rent rebate to $975.

This service would be of limited usefulness. State filings take information the Federal filings. If somebody would already have the Federal returns completed, it is unlikely they would come to this office for just doing PA state returns. How often are the two filings separated? For a free service to a selected audience, VITA can be very helpful. They are available every day after Feb 4, and do all filings. There is no need to separate out Federal and PA state returns. http://www.thealmanac.net/alm/story11/01-09-2013_tax-assistance [Sorry, don't see a Patch story on this service, so referenced another one just published.]

I also know that The Bible Chapel in Peters Twp. does free tax preparation as well. I tried looking at their website to see if any information was posted but haven't seen anything. I will call this week and send you the info Amanda! Might be good for Peters Patch as well.

Tara, The Bible Chapel only makes space available for the VITA group. The service and anything related to tax preparation is uncoupled from The Bible Chapel. Their part is only providing the facility. This is the service reference in the above article.
