Washington County District Attorney Eugene A. Vittone on Thursday announced that James McElhaney will be assuming the job of chief county detective effective immediately.

McElhaney replaces J. Michael Aaron, who retired earlier this month.

“I am very happy that Chief McElhaney has agreed to lead our law enforcement efforts. Jim is well-respected by members of the law enforcement community and has earned the respect of prosecutors and defense attorneys through the high caliber of his investigative work,” Vittone said. “My office is, indeed, fortunate to have an individual of Chief McElhaney’s character, integrity and professional knowledge joining us. I am also grateful to retiring Chief Aaron for his help during the transition period and wish him well in his retirement.”
