Canon-McMillan School Board Hires Teachers, Principal—Buys Property

Here's what happened at the board's special voting meeting Monday night.

on Monday held a special voting meeting—hiring staff and taking other action.

Here’s what happened:

  • The board accepted the resignation of Lori Peterson from her position as an elementary art teacher, effective Aug. 7. It also accepted the resignation of Mary Jackson from her position as a four-hour custodian at effective April 16, 2012.
  • Directors appointed Nina Unitas as a 215-day principal at at an annual salary of $75,480, effective Aug. 14, 2012.
  • The board hired Rebecca O’Neil and Louis Glivic as elementary school teachers. They also hired Michele Morgan as a learning-support teacher at , Crystal Heck Miles as an autistic-support teacher at South Central Elementary, Amber Hinton as a therapeutic emotional-support teacher at Cecil Intermediate and Katelyn Tyler as a learning support teacher at the . Also hired was Jessica Stiffy, who will be paid $46,500 as a therapeutic emotional support teacher at the high school. The agenda indicated the hire related to the Transfer of Entities provision of the Public School Code.
  • Directors also voted to purchase 108 ½ S. Central Ave. at a total cost not to exceed $177,930. The parcel is a residential property in the block of the former All Pro Auto Mall next to South Central Elementary. The future use of the property was not discussed at the meeting Monday.

The board will meet next at 7 p.m. Monday in the district administration building. The meeting is open to the public.
