Canon-McMillan Class of 2013 Graduation Ceremony Thursday

Congratulations to the Canon-McMillan Class of 2013, which will celebrate its graduation Thursday.

There will be 343 seniors—178 males and 165 females—at commencement ceremonies, which begin at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.

Speakers will be valedictorian Jacob Brown, salutatorian Nicole Witkowski, and honor student Connor Schram.

Brown, the son of Charles D. and Teena M. Brown of McDonald, will attend Penn State University, Schreyer Honors College, at the main campus to study astronomy and astrophysics.

He has received the Academic Excellence award from Penn State, Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship, and Paul Pivac Scholarship for Emergency Services.

Brown is a member of National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, French Club, Bella Voce and men’s ensemble, Math League, president of French National Honor Society, team captain of the Academic WorldQuest Competition, and Lead CM Mentor.

His volunteer activities included being a junior firefighter at the Cecil 3 Volunteer Fire Department, placing flags on graves on Memorial Day, singing for services on Veterans Day, singing at Children’s Hospital for musical therapy, and reading stories at Frank Sarris Public Library for Literacy Nights.

He has been employed as a bagger/laborer at the South Fayette Shop N’ Save.

Witkowski, the daughter of Joseph C. Witkowski of McMurray, plans to attend Duquesne University to major in music education. She received an $8,000 academic scholarship from the school and a $10,000 flute scholarship.

She is a two-year member of the PMEA District 1 honor band and performed on flute at Carnegie Music Hall. She also is vice president of the National Honor Society, historian of Spanish Honor Society, senior class secretary of Student Council, member of the Spanish Club, and a Lead CM Mentor. She served as one of three drum majors as a senior and a member of Bella Voce choir.

The son of Ron and Kristen Schram of Canonsburg, Connor received a full-athletic scholarship for wrestling to Stanford University.

He was a three-year captain of the varsity wrestling team, twice PIAA state champion, was twice Powerade wrestling champion, three-time WPIAL champion, four-time PIAA state finalist. He wrestled in the Dapper Dan Classic and was member of the United States Dream Team.

He was a member of National Honor Society, treasurer of the French National Honor Society, a Lead CM Mentor, and a member of Teen Outreach Advisery Board.
