In more than 30 years of coaching, Canon-McMillan Athletic Director Guy Montecalvo said his heart never raced faster than during the match that clenched the PIAA Team Tournament Title for the high school wrestling team this year.
Montecalvo joined school officials and local dignitaries Friday afternoon for a pep rally to congratulate the team—which aims to make history and also win the upcoming PIAA Individual Tournament in two weeks.
U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy joined state Rep. Brandon Neuman and state Sen. Tim Solobay in honoring the team and its coaches—handing citations to each member of the wrestling team, which stood at center court while the rest of the student body looked on.
"You've made our community proud, and we appreciate your efforts," , D-Canonsburg, told them.
Neuman, D-North Strabane, who is a former Canon-Mac wrestler and football player, also lauded the team for its championship season, and wished them luck during their upcoming matches.
"I want you guys to know you are living history right now. Three more weeks," he told them of the upcoming play. "Keep making history."
