Romans 3:23-25

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is Christ Jesus: Whom God hath sent forth to be a propitiation of through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.

I chose this verse because it reminds us that we all have sinned; and because of that sin we have become separated from God. He sent His Son Jesus to pay for our sins. Through the process of His crucifixion, our sins were paid for, and we have the opportunity to receive forgiveness. Eternity in Heaven cannot be purchased, it is not earned through good deeds or being a good person. It does not come from many different religions or from a priest, pastor, evangelist, preacher, etc. It is given to us freely from God. The Bible teaches us that the steps to receive the gift of eternal life are: 1. Confess that you are a sinner 2. Believe Jesus Christ died for your sin and that He rose from the grave 3. Repent. This means to feel guilty about your sins 4. Ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness. If you're not sure how to do this, you can say this simple prayer. Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I believe you paid for my sins on the cross. I believe you were resurrected from the grave. Please forgive me for my sins. I place my trust in you alone to be my Saviour and take me to Heaven when I die. Amen. If you said this prayer and believe it, then you're now saved. I would love to hear from you if you've gotten saved. Either comment here, or email me: redneck.cable.guy2012@gmail.com

This passage includes the essence of the Christian gospel in only a few words. Scott, you have hit on these points already. To elaborate, 1. Man is a sinner, separated from God (see Genesis 3), and the relationship is irrevocably broken. 2. Not only has God imposed his penalty on mankind (Gen 2:17), He provides the path to restore the relationship. Only because He is merciful (does not give us what we do deserve), and His grace (gives us what we do not deserve), does the plan of salvation work. 3. God provides the substitutionary atonement for mankind, that is, having the penalty put onto Jesus Christ, through His death. Jesus paid the penalty (justification), allowing mankind, one by one, to be made right again with God. 4. The sins of every person are forgiven, and every person accepting the finished work of Jesus Christ as payment for the penalty, is redeemed (bought back into a right relationship). "... how can we not accept such a great salvation ....?" Trust in Jesus' completed work. Remember, believing in God is insufficient for salvation, but believing God (accepting His promises) restores the broken relationship (see #1 above). There is a huge difference between "believing in God," and "believing God."
