Canonsburg Council Appoints Two to UCC Board

Council also hired firm to create economic development plan and approved paving projects.

At Monday’s meeting, Canonsburg Council voted unanimously to appoint Ken McWilliams and Leon Strimel to the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Board. Another motion was created and passed awarding 4Ward Planning of Pittsburgh the contract to create an economic development plan for Canonsburg. ProTech of New Castle will be hired for the paving of Woodland Road, Alpine Drive and Crosby Drive with a bid of $68,078.90, pending proper bonds and insurance. The budgeted amount left approximately $20,000 and council will be looking into doing road work on College Ave. between Greenside and Central in front of the middle school. The sign still says Price's Tavern, but this building hasn't been occupied for at least eight years. For those of you who have lived here a while, you probably remember seeing the many news accounts of the double shooting that occurred here in November 2003. Road Closing Set for Hot Diggity Dog Days

Canonsburg is gearing up for this weekend's festival to honor the 100th birthday of hometown singer Perry Como.

East Pike Street from Greenside to Central Avenue will close at 6 a.m. May 18 in preparation for the Hot Diggity Dog Days festival set for Friday and Saturday this week. The road will reopen at midnight May 19. The Luksis Municipal lot on East Pike Street will also be closed, however the Rite Aid lot across the street will be open for parking.  More information about the festival, including a schedule of events, is available on Canon-McMillan Patch. Peters' Anglican Parish Moving to Canonsburg

On Thursday, May 31, the church will turn its property over to the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The Anglican Parish of Christ the Redeemer (formally St. David’s Anglican Church) will vacate its property at 905 East McMurray Rd. in Peters Township on Thursday, May 31, and relocate to Canonsburg. It will turn its property over to the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. The Rev. David Wilson, rector of Redeemer Parish, said the parish "holds no acrimony toward the new occupants of our former property. "We wish them well and we hope they and their newly-elected Bishop Dorsey McConnell will faithfully contend for the faith as once delivered to the saints,” he said.   St. David’s has a long history of leadership in the renewal and reformation of the faith, first through the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh and now in the Anglican Diocese of …

White Supports House Dems in Act 13 Legal Brief

State Sen. Jesse White joined his colleagues in filing legal brief supporting Act 13 constitutionality challenge.

The House Democratic Caucus, which includes State Rep. Jesse White (D-Cecil), has filed a special legal brief known as an "amicus curiae," to support arguments in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the elimination of local zoning ordinances for oil and gas operations under Act 13, the Marcellus Shale law passed earlier this year. White was named on the brief as one of 30 House Democrats who provided support of the case that charge Act 13 is an unconstitutional "special law that creates a class of one industry with substantially more rights than any other industry, citizen or business in the Commonwealth in violation of Article III, Section 32 of the Pennsylvania Constitution." Neighborhood Disturbance Leads to Arrest of Canonsburg Man

Police report possible additional charges.

Canonsburg police responded to a report of fighting and mention of a gun on Summit Street on Monday around 9:18 p.m. They were assisted by officers from North Strabane, Chartiers and Houston police. According to witnesses and participants, a fight broke out between John Lloyd and Jason Reichelt at 325 Summit St. when Lloyd refused to move his truck to let Reichelt leave. Lloyd was looking for information on his grandson. Lloyd was found bleeding from the face and Reichelt with blood on his hands. A witness indicated that Reichelt punched Lloyd. Medics were called to the scene but Lloyd refused treatment. Reichelt said he knew Lloyd had a gun, which was found to be properly registered and was not witnessed during the altercation, police …

Two New Stores Open in Canonsburg

Canonsburg is welcoming two new stores to its downtown and Canonsburg Plaza locations. Guntown Boards is located at 121 W. Pike St. and a new Verizon Wireless The Cellular Connection is at 113 Cavasina Dr., behind Starbucks. Guntown Boards is a skateboard shop that sells everything to do with boards and boarding including T-shirts, backpacks and more. They are a Shorty’s authorized dealer but carry all brands of boards and equipment. Co-owner Anthony Covey has been skating for 15 years and his stepfather, George Bosco, is a local resident. “There’s really nowhere around here that sells skateboard equipment and it’s becoming very popular so we decided to give it a shot,” said Covey.  The store's grand opening was May 5. Obituary: Daniel R. Bruno

Dec. 17, 1929-May 14, 2012

Daniel R. Bruno, 82, of Canonsburg, died peacefully Monday, May 14, 2012, in Canonsburg General Hospital. He was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Canonsburg, a son of Philip and Rose Turco Bruno. Daniel was a lifelong Canonsburg resident and was a barber for 30 years. He was then employed by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for 10 years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191. He was a devoted family man and a good friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Violet I. "Vicki" Cage Bruno; one daughter, Danelle R.
