Canon-Mac Lacrosse Ends Season Play

Defeat to Quaker Valley wraps up a season that puts team in good position for next year.

By Gary W. Beam The Canon-McMillan lacrosse season came to end last night at Canon-Mac Stadium as the Quaker Valley Quakers dominated the Big Macs, posting a 14-4 victory and claiming the prize of a playoff berth in the upcoming WPIAL Division II playoffs. Missing the playoffs comes as a great disappointment to the players, coaches and supporters of the team after a very successful 13-5 overall season record. The Big Macs dropped their final four games, three of which were division games, with opponents averaging nearly 12 goals per game. A win in any one of those games would have given Canon-Mac its first playoff appearance since Big Macs lacrosse became a WPIAL-sanctioned sport. The evening started out as most expected with a very tight …

Canon-McMillan Falls to Char Valley in Lacrosse

Despite a halftime lead, the team lost ground to the Colts as the game progressed.

By Gary W. Beam The Canon-McMillan lacrosse team hosted the Chartiers Valley Colts Thursday night at Canon-Mac Stadium in a very big Division 2-Section 1 game. The Colts came into the game with a half-game lead over the Big Macs, with 5-2 and 4-2 records, respectively. The winner would clinch a second place finish in the division and assure themselves a home game in the upcoming playoffs. The stage was set and even Comcast was present to record the game for future broadcast next week on its On Demand channel. But what could have been a night to remember became a night to forget as the Big Macs squandered a 7-1 advantage and eventually succumbed to the Colts' speed and tenacity, losing 14-9. After the Colts struck first with a goal four …

Simpson Is 'Most Positive High School Athlete'

Canon-McMillan senior Zach Simpson got the award in the sport of boys lacrosse by Positive Athlete, founded by Pittsburgh Steeler Hines Ward.

Canon-McMillan High School senior Zach Simpson was voted western Pennsylvania’s “Most Positive High School Athlete” in the sport of boys lacrosse by Positive Athlete, an organization created by former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward. Ward presented the award to Simpson, along with 25 other winners representing a variety of boys and girls sports in western Pennsylvania, in a ceremony at the Heinz History Center–Sports Museum in downtown Pittsburgh on April 21. Simpson was nominated for the award by his lacrosse coach, Craig Schleifstein. KDKA sports anchor Bob Pompeani and MSA Sports’ Lanny Frattare and Don Rebel served as the masters of ceremony. “I wasn’t even the most talented guy on my football team – there were a lot of …

Roethlisberger Earns Miami Degree

The Pittsburgh Steeler recently completed his senior capstone and walked at Sunday's commencement ceremony in Oxford, OH.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger graduated from Miami University in Ohio on Sunday—nine years after leaving for the NFL. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education during a commencement ceremony at Miami's Millett Hall—the university's basketball arena close to Yager Stadium, where he set records he still holds today.  The 30-year-old joined nearly 600 students in receiving their diplomas on campus from The School of Education, Health & Society—a ceremony officiated by Dean Carine Feyten. His wife, Ashley; his father and stepmother, Ken and Brenda; and his grandmother, Audrey, were in attendance. He told the university he's very proud of the school, the red "M," and the education he has received.  Before …

Baldwin Highlanders Defeat Big Macs 8-7

Chance to win WPIAL playoff berth denied; 'In the Senior Spotlight' features three more senior players.

By Gary W. Beam An old adage states that opportunity only knocks once, it will not come again. The Canon-McMillan lacrosse team learned, first-hand, how incorrect this saying is. An opportunity to clinch a playoff berth in the WPIAL Division 2-Section 1 playoffs slipped through their fingers last night at Canon-Mac Stadium as the Baldwin Highlanders defeated the Big Macs, 8-7 in overtime. In six of the last eight Canon Mac games, one goal has separated the victor from the loser and of those six, four have gone into overtime. Baldwin got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first two minutes and 10 seconds of the game. But as has been their trademark, the Big Macs battled back and, after trailing 4-3 at the half, tied the game on a…

Canon-Mac Lacrosse Loses to Greensburg Central

Tonight is Senior Night against Baldwin; 'In the Senior Spotlight' profiles three players.

By Gary W. Beam The hopes of a Division 2-Section 1 championship for the Canon-McMillan Lacrosse team were dampened significantly last night in Westmoreland County as the Big Macs suffered a disappointing 10-9 loss to the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions. Canon-Mac would need to win its final three games and Greensburg would need to lose both of its remaining games in order for both teams to finish with two section losses. However, Canon-Mac would have a better winning percentage within the section than Greensburg (.800 vs .750) because the Big Macs would have played two more section games. A win last night would have allowed the Big Macs to determine their own destiny, but it just wasn’t to be. Canon-Mac got off to a fast start as …

Canon-Mac Knocks Knoch Knights 9-8

Meet the lacrosse team's seniors in "Senior Spotlight."

By Gary Beam Prior to last night’s game in Saxonburg, the Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team would have been sorry to see April come to a close as the Big Macs had gone undefeated for the entire month—before last night’s contest with the Knoch Knights. Riding the high wave of success that a nine-game unbeaten streak brings also brings with it the chance of encountering that rogue wave, the one that threatens even the largest and most stable of ships. Canon-Mac players knew that their rematch with the Knights would not be easy, based on their experience surviving a shoot-out back in March at Canon-Mac Stadium and coming out with a 13-10 victory. But the ocean swells were high last night as the Big Macs had difficulty in gaining …
