The team plays Baldwin at home tonight—which also marks Senior Night for the Big Macs.
By Gary Beam The Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team traveled to Saxonburg Monday afternoon in a rematch with the Knoch Knights. The two teams faced each other on April 4 at Canon-McMillan Memorial Stadium, a match the Big Macs dominated by a final score of 17-2. However, as the brokerage company ads goes; ”Past results to not ensure future outcomes,” so also goes WPIAL high school lacrosse. All-day rains made the field extremely muddy and slippery but that didn’t seem to affect either team’s offenses. In a game that featured a staggering 86 shots, 50 which found their way on goal, and 26 of those resulting in goals, the Big Macs bested the Knights by a final score of 15-11. Knoch held leads on three occasions, the latest being past …

By Gary Beam The Canon-McMillan Boys Lacrosse team began its 2013 season Friday night on a high note as theBig Macs dominated the Trinity Hillers 13-1. The last three season openers for the Big Macs have been at Hiller Field and the weather conditions for each have been far from ideal with spring being only a hopeful wish. Despite temperatures in the 30s and the wind whipping at a serious pace, Canon-Mac came out on fire, building up a 9-0 halftime lead—mainly on the strength of three-goal performances by Zach Moore and Richie Leeds. Connor Neimeyer continued the onslaught only 14 seconds into the second half after Moore set him up all alone in front of the Trinity goal. Neimeyer ended the evening with a two-goal, four-assist performance. …

Panthers improve to 2-0 while Big Macs still seek first win.
On paper, it looked like a mismatch: Upper St. Clair, which advanced to last year’s WPIAL Class AAAA championship game, vs. Canon-McMillan, a team that has one win since 2009. But you never know. That’s why they play the games. Unfortunately for the Big Macs, Friday’s contest lived down to the apparent disparity, as the Panthers scored early and often on the way to a 50-0 victory. Tim Witenske caught a touchdown pass from Pete Coughlin following a blocked punt less than one minute into the game, and Upper St. Clair never looked back. The score was 43-0 at halftime. Upper St. Clair (2-0) takes on Southeastern Conference rival Peters Township (2-0) next Friday, while Canon-McMillan (0-2) travels to Pittsburgh Central Catholic (2-0) for a non…

The Canon-McMillan High School Boys lacrosse team continued its winning ways Thursday night with a 12-7 victory over the North Hills Indians at Martorelli Stadium in West View. In a very physical contest, the Big Macs built up a six-goal lead early in the third quarter and answered each valiant attempt at a North Hills comeback with a goal of their own. Connor Niemeyer had a hand in half of the Canon-Mac scores with five assists and a goal. Richie Leeds added two goals and an assist and three other Big Macs—Matt Maletta, Nick Podlaszewski and Andrew Hendal—netted two goals each. Sophomore goalie Noah Baertsch also turned in a strong performance with 14 saves. The win boosts the team’s season record to 6-1. The JV team continued its very …

In a thrilling comeback that included winning five straight matches, wrestlers from Canon-McMillan High School became only the second WPIAL team in history to win a state AAA team championship. The Big Macs defeated the District 10 champs McDowell High School 35-20 to bring home the crown after falling behind early. In recognition of their accomplishment, I presented the athletes and coaches with Senate citations during a rally at the high school. To see more photos of the event, click here. A last-minute shot cements 60-57 win against section rival Bethel Park.
BETHEL PARK— Dylan Berger knows that the way his team has been playing games down to the wire lately is more than a little bit nerve-wracking. In fact, the Canon-McMillan senior admits it can be downright scary at times. “But it’s a bit more fun this way too,” he said. For the third time in as many WPIAL Class AAAA Section 4 games, Berger and his Big Macs found a way to eke out a win in the final minute, this time beating section rival Bethel Park 60-57 on Friday night. Berger led all scorers with 22 points, while Canon-McMillan teammates Brett Haney and Kionte Davis added 13 and 10 points respectively. Bethel Park senior Kenny Klase proved to be a handful, leading the Blackhawks (5-7, 2-4) with 19 points of his own. But in the end, a …
