Volunteer Groups Benefit from Small Games Bill

Local elementary pupils are also congratulated.

Good news for local volunteer organizations: The Legislature has passed a bill that will help them earn more revenue from small games of chance. Some of these outfits have been having a hard time making ends meet, and this bill makes some common-sense changes to help them raise more money for the good work they do. The House concurred on the Senate version of House Bill 169. The measure is largely the same as a bill that I introduced in the House two years ago, and it now goes to the governor’s desk. I’ve been trying to get this done for a long time, but anytime you allow more money to move around you have to make sure that the right controls are in place. Parents Plead for Additional Teacher At Cecil Elementary

Third grade class at Cecil is larger than most.

More than a dozen parents showed up to the Canon-McMillan School Board meeting Monday to plead their case for an additional teacher to be added to the third grade at Cecil Elementary. The parents have seen a decline from three second grade teachers last year to only two third grade classes for the 2011-2012 school year. The reduction has resulted in 29 students in each class. Several mothers said the larger class size has effected their child’s performance. They also expressed concerns about safety in the event of a fire or other emergency at the school. One third-grade mother, Michele Mastroianni, said that she has seen how it has impacted her own daughter and was glad to see so many parents show up to request a new teacher be hired. “…
