School Director Manuel Pihakis said the board accepted Chris Mary's resignation with regret.
Canon-McMillan School directors on Monday accepted the resignation of varsity wrestling coach Chris Mary. School Director Manuel Pihakis said the board knew the resignation was coming, and that it was accepted "with regret." Calling Mary and his accomplishments "super," Pihakis stressed that the outgoing coach was more than just someone who helped lead his wrestlers to victory time and again (to four consecutive WPIAL team titles, for example). "He's been the greatest representative Canon-McMillan can have," the school director said, adding that Mary is respected by administrators, his team and wrestling coaches across the state." But no worries: Warmer weather is on its way.
It's not exactly going to be a flip-flop and shorts kinda day. According to the National Weather Service, the Canon-McMillan Patch area will see mostly sunny skies today, but the high temperature will be just 53. And that's not all: Just like last night, areas of frost after 1 a.m. is expected. Otherwise, Monday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 33. Those anxiously awaiting warmer spring weather won't have to wait long, though. Tuesday is expected to be about 63 degrees—with even more pleasant temperatures expected later in the week. The team will finish its 2013 season this week with two games on the road.
The Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team completed its home schedule Friday night with a loss to the Quaker Valley Quakers by a final of 13-7. The Big Macs finish their 2013 season with two road games this week against Greater Latrobe and Chartiers Valley. Canon-Mac dug an early game hole, falling behind 4-0 before four minutes had elapsed in the first quarter. Late period goals by Nick Carr, Evan Crompton and Ben Ward closed the deficit within a goal but that was as close to the Quakers that Canon-McMillan would get for the rest of the contest. The visitors scored eight of the next nine goals and by the middle of the third quarter the Big Macs fate had been sealed. Ward and Carr would end up with two goals each for the Big Macs …

The new coach was voted in 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Vacant since November, Canon-McMillan High School's head varsity football coaching position was filled Tuesday afternoon. The board voted 6-0 to hire Ron Coder of Bellevue for the position. Coder formerly served as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Passion women's football team. He also was previously a volunteer coach with Northgate School District. Here are the other personnel moves made at Tuesday's meeting.
Canon-McMillan School Board named a new assistant superintendent Tuesday. Scott Chambers will earn an annual salary of $117,000 effective Jan. 23, 2013 through June 30, 2016. The board also hired Eric Schrader as a professional elementary music teacher at a salary of $41,400 effective Feb. 4, 2013. Also hired was Virginia McAnulty as a paraeducator at Borland Manor Elementary effective Jan. 23 at the contracted rate. The board also named Ruth Ann Fox as the high school spring musical choral dlrector at an annual salary of $2,946. The board also retroactively approved unpaid leave days for Debra Young for Oct. 15 through Nov. 16, 2012 and Dec. 5 through Dec. 11, 2012.

The blast of cold air that has engulfed the Pittsburgh region over the past few days will linger a little longer and is now bringing snow showers. The National Weather Service is forecasting snow in the Pittsburgh area late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. There is also a chance of snow Friday afternoon. All the showers could bring 1 to 3 inches before the weekend. The temperatures will remain bitterly cold with lows in the single digits on Thursday and wind chill values below 0.
