1-Mill Tax Increase Proposed at Canon-McMillan School District

School directors preliminarily approved the $65.97 million spending plan Monday.

Canon-McMillan School Board approved a preliminary spending plan for the 2013-14 school year this week that includes a 1-mill tax increase. "Let me emphasize 'preliminary,'" school Director Manuel Pihakis said. "We put that in there as a safeguard." He said the board and administration is working to eliminate that increase. The $65.97 million budget is on display and is expected to be formally ratified next month. School officials have said that increased pension contribution costs contributed to the possible increase, and that questions still surround the amount the district will receive in reimbursements from the state. The budget passed with only one no vote, cast by school Director Eric Kline. Kline was not immediately available for …

Literacy Night Thrills Canon-McMillan Students

Elementary-age students took part in the event this week.

There was a lot of horsin’ around at the Frank Sarris Public Library—but it was all in good fun as part of the 2013 Reading Round-Up! Students in kindergarten through fourth grade attending a Canon-McMillan elementary school were invited to the two-night event. The theme for the second annual literacy festival included country western themed stories, games, crafts, music, and prizes. Cowboys and cowgirls of all ages showed up for the event—even Canon-McMillan high school students from the National Honor Society and student council volunteered their time throughout the evening. Just fewer than 200 elementary school students attended, along with their parents, guardians and siblings. A sampling of activities included reading in a horse stall…

Big Macs Edge Out Moon Tigers in 'Huge Victory'

The boys lacrosse team next heads to Wheeling Central Catholic tonight.

By Gary Beam In a game that could have ended any hopes of making this year’s WPIAL boy’s Lacrosse playoffs, the Canon-McMillan Big Macs toughed out a huge victory on the road Wednesday night over the Moon Area Tigers by a final score of 11-9. As a strong weather front made its way through the area in the early evening, high winds and a cold, wet rain made conditions miserable for both players and spectators alike. But as everyone hunkered down to take battle, it was soon apparent that the contest would be long and exciting because Canon-Mac would never lead by more than two goals at the end of any quarter and the result was in the balance until Josh Minor sealed the game with a goal with only 26 seconds remaining in the game. The Big Macs …

Law Spurs Nutritional Changes, New Intiatives at Canon-McMillan School District

The changes, though, have also prompted a decrease in participation—especially among older students. Here is what the district is doing to combat the issue.

Joni Mansmann wants students to know: The district got no joy from having the salt shakers removed from the cafeterias at Canon-McMillan schools. It was one of those “have-to-do” things. Mansmann, the district’s director of business and finance, said that was just one change that needed to be made in the wake of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act reissue and the new regulations that came with it. While the grumbling over the loss of those salt shakers disturbed one graduating senior so much that she included the issue in her graduation speech last year, the district is trying to find a way to adapt to the new standards while still impressing the palates of students. While Mansmann said that a district’s food service is usually a revenue-…

Spencer will be paid for accumulated vacation, sick and personal time in accordance with her letter of resignation. She has been with the district for 26 years. "She is one of the most dedicated employees in the district," school Director Manuel Pihakis said prior to the vote. Director Eric Kline nodded his head in agreement, adding with a smile, "I told her we aren't accepting her resignation." The board …
