Big Mac Lacrosse Team Loses to Quaker Valley

The team will finish its 2013 season this week with two games on the road.

The Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team completed its home schedule Friday night with a loss to the Quaker Valley Quakers by a final of 13-7. The Big Macs finish their 2013 season with two road games this week against Greater Latrobe and Chartiers Valley. Canon-Mac dug an early game hole, falling behind 4-0 before four minutes had elapsed in the first quarter. Late period goals by Nick Carr, Evan Crompton and Ben Ward closed the deficit within a goal but that was as close to the Quakers that Canon-McMillan would get for the rest of the contest. The visitors scored eight of the next nine goals and by the middle of the third quarter the Big Macs fate had been sealed. Ward and Carr would end up with two goals each for the Big Macs …

Big Mac Lacrosse Team Falls to Baldwin

The team finishes their home schedule tonight against Quaker Valley.

By Gary Beam Sometimes a little help from your friends goes a long way, but if you have an opportunity to get something accomplished by yourself, most times the surety of the result lies in one’s own hands. So it was Wednesday night with the Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team as a win against Baldwin and a win next week against Chartiers Valley would ensure a playoff berth in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs. But, as was the case last year, the Big Macs just couldn’t win the big one as they fell to the Highlanders 11-8 in a titanic struggle at Canon-McMillan Memorial Stadium. Like two prize fighters, the teams exchanged blow after blow in a well-played game that saw Baldwin pull out to a 4-1 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first half when…

Big Mac Lacrosse Team Slays Knoch Knights

The team plays Baldwin at home tonight—which also marks Senior Night for the Big Macs.

By Gary Beam The Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team traveled to Saxonburg Monday afternoon in a rematch with the Knoch Knights. The two teams faced each other on April 4 at Canon-McMillan Memorial Stadium, a match the Big Macs dominated by a final score of 17-2. However, as the brokerage company ads goes; ”Past results to not ensure future outcomes,” so also goes WPIAL high school lacrosse. All-day rains made the field extremely muddy and slippery but that didn’t seem to affect either team’s offenses. In a game that featured a staggering 86 shots, 50 which found their way on goal, and 26 of those resulting in goals, the Big Macs bested the Knights by a final score of 15-11. Knoch held leads on three occasions, the latest being past …

Canon-McMillan Lacrosse Team Trounces Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights

The team next heads to Knoch tonight.

By Gary Beam The Canon McMillan Big Macs turned what a game that was tied at the half into a rout Friday night, defeating the Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights 16-7 at Canon-McMillan Memorial Stadium. Ben Ward propelled the home team into the lead, scoring two goals within 31 seconds before the game was two-and-a-half minutes old—but if the Big Macs thought the contest was going to be easy, Wheeling gave them reason to believe differently as they responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3- 2 lead early in the second quarter. After exchanging goals, Connor Niemeyer and Josh Minor, a sophomore, put the Big Macs back into the lead, only to see Wheeling score with fewer than 30 seconds remaining in the half sending the teams to …

Big Macs Edge Out Moon Tigers in 'Huge Victory'

The boys lacrosse team next heads to Wheeling Central Catholic tonight.

By Gary Beam In a game that could have ended any hopes of making this year’s WPIAL boy’s Lacrosse playoffs, the Canon-McMillan Big Macs toughed out a huge victory on the road Wednesday night over the Moon Area Tigers by a final score of 11-9. As a strong weather front made its way through the area in the early evening, high winds and a cold, wet rain made conditions miserable for both players and spectators alike. But as everyone hunkered down to take battle, it was soon apparent that the contest would be long and exciting because Canon-Mac would never lead by more than two goals at the end of any quarter and the result was in the balance until Josh Minor sealed the game with a goal with only 26 seconds remaining in the game. The Big Macs …

Big Mac Lacrosse Team Falls to Seton LaSalle Rebels

The team lost 12-5 Wednesday.

By Gary Beam Canon-McMillan learned first-hand last night why the Seton LaSalle Rebels are ranked third in the latest LAX Power PA West WPIAL computer rankings. The Big Macs fell to the Rebels by a final of 12-5, raising Seton LaSalle’s overall record to 5-0 (2-0 in division) and dropping the losers to 7-2 (0-2 in division). Before the half way point of the first quarter, the Rebels built up a 3-0 lead, but when the Big Mac’s Nick Carr netted Canon-Mac’s first goal, a spark had seemed to been struck. But Seton LaSalle was credited with six of the next eight goals scored and the Big Macs staggered to the locker room facing a half-time deficit of 9-3. A six score deficit in some sports might be overwhelming, but in lacrosse goals tend to be …

Big Mac Lacrosse Team Crushes North Hills Indians

The team's next match is tonight.

By Gary Beam The Indians of North Hills challenged the home-standing Canon-McMillan Big Macs Monday night in a game where the final score wasn’t quite indicative of the struggle that took place. Although the Big Macs ended up on the positive side of a 14-3 final score, the contest was a tight affair for the first half, with uncertainty of the outcome until late in the third quarter. After the teams exchanged a pair of first period goals, Canon-Mac garnered some breathing space when Nick Carr and Ben Ward led the offense to a half-time lead of 6-3. Despite the fact that the ensuing three goals were scored by the Big Macs, North Hills dominated the evening’s face-offs (19 of 21), an area of the game dominated by the Big Macs in previous …

Big Macs Slay Dragons 17-0

Next up for the Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team is a match against the North Hills Indians tonight.

The Big Macs lacrosse team rebounded from its first loss of the season against Winschester Thurston with a devastating 17-0 rout of the Taylor Alderdice Dragons on Friday at Cupples Stadium on Pittsburgh's South Side. Senior Richie Leeds' goal less then two minutes into the game got Canon-McMillan off and running and the onslaught was on. Nick Carr and Ben Ward paced Canon-McMillan with six and four first-half goals, respectively. In addition to Ward's goal-scoring, he assisted on four other Big Mac goals. Connor Neimeyer contributed another pair of goals and two assists. The other goal scorers were Matt Smutney, Jeremy Cadez, Zach Moore and John Binotto. Cadez' goal was inspiring as he was forced to sit out the entire 2012 season with a …

Canon-Mac Lacrosse Team Loses First Conference Game of Season

The team plays again tonight against Taylor Allderdice.

By Gary Beam The Canon-McMillan High School lacrosse team lost its first conference game Wednesday afternoon as the Winchester Thurston Bears held the Big Macs powerful offense in check, winning 5-3. Canon-McMillan had scored 10 or more goals in each of its first five games; however the slippery, muddy field along with the Bears’ defense throttled the Big Mac offense. The goal scoring for Canon-McMillan was led by Nick Carr, with two tallies, and Isaac Miles who netted the only other score. Will Graziani turned in a string performance in goal. The loss drops Canon-Mac’s overall record to 5-1 and conference record to 0-1. The Big Macs continue on the road this week with an encounter with Taylor Allderdice today—Friday, April 12—before …

Canon-McMillan Decimates Norwin Knights

The boys varsity team won 11-6.

By Gary Beam In WPIAL Lacrosse action Monday night, Canon-McMillan defeated the Knights from Norwin at Big Mac Stadium by the score of 11-6. In an extremely physical game that amassed a combined 17 extra man opportunities, the goals netted by the Big Macs came, while the teams were both at full strength, ultimately determined the final outcome. Canon-Mac caught the Knights flat-footed from the start and before Norwin collected its composure, the Big Macs build up a 5-0 first quarter lead. Two goals by Nick Carr and a goal each from Richie Leeds, Josh Minor and Evan Crompton began the onslaught. For the second consecutive game Crompton dominated the face-off circle winning all six first quarter scrums which kept Canon-Mac in the Knights …
