Oldies Concert Lineup Announced

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will be in town.

The Toys featuring Barbara Harris, Terry Sylvester (formerly of the Hollies and the Holidays) will be the featured acts at the annual Fraternal Order of Police Oldies Show at Canon-McMillan High School Sunday, April 28. Sylvester was a member of the Hollies beginning in 1969, scoring hits with songs such as “Sorry Suzanne,” “He Ain’t Heavy," and “Air That I Breathe.” He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Hollies. The Toys were an early ‘60s female trio that scored two major hits in 1965 and 1966 with “Lover’s Concerto” and “Attack.” "Lover’s Concerto,” adapted from Bach’s Minuet from the Anna Magdalena Notebook, was a No. 1 hit in Western Pennsylvania and climbed all the way to number two on the …

Prescription Drug Abuse Summit Planned at Canon-McMillan High School

The event is slated for Jan. 31.

The non-medical use of prescription drugs contributes to nearly 40,000 deaths and almost $200  billion in health-care costs annually. ln Washington County alone there were more than 50 drug-related overdose deaths in 2011, according to Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. Drug­-induced deaths are the number-one cause of injury deaths in America. More Americans are dying from drug-induced deaths than from traffic fatalities. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control has labeled prescription drug abuse ”an epidemic.“ According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, two-and-a-half times more  Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than those using cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and inhalants combined. Former Canonsburg Man Accused of Repeatedly Sexually Assaulting Girl

Richard Rupar is in Washington County Jail on $100,000 bond.

A former Canonsburg man has been jailed on charges he repeatedly sexually assaulted a young girl while she was in his care. Richard Rupar, 60, whose current address was listed as being in Myrtle Beach, S.C., was arraigned Tuesday night before district Judge David Mark on charges including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent sexual assault, endangering the welfare of children, and corruption of minors. The charges were originally filed by Canonsburg Police Department Nov. 28. Mark remanded Rupar to the Washington County Jail and set his bail at $100,000. According to the criminal complaint, the victim, now 23, went to the Washington County District Attorney’s Domestic Crimes unit on Nov. 20 after having disclosed to her …

News Nearby: Gang Leader Found Guilty of Conspiring to Traffic Heroin

The Canonsburg Police Department helped in the investigation that led to the conviction of a North Side man.

After deliberating for two hours, a federal jury found a North Side gang leader guilty of one count of violating federal narcotics trafficking laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced Wednesday. The Canonsburg Police Department was one of several agencies that helped investigate the case, according to a release. Gregory Washington, 36, of Pittsburgh, was tried before United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab in Pittsburgh. The evidence presented at trial established that Washington conspired to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin from in or around January 2010 to March 3, 2011. Canonsburg Police Seek K-9 Program

Mayor David H. Rhome and members of the Canonsburg Police Department announced plans for the program Monday—and received council's blessing to proceed with fundraising efforts.

Officer safety. Narcotics detection. Tracking. “A dog can do what human eyes can’t and what human hands can’t,” Det. Al Coghill told Canonsburg Council Monday—when Mayor David H. Rhome and the police department announced it was seeking to implement a K9 program in the borough. They attended council’s meeting to seek its blessing in proceeding with plans for the program, a blessing that council granted. Members of the police department were clear: The price to implement the program is steep, and the only way to pay for the $55,000 to $60,000 upstart costs would be through the support of local businesses willing to donate to what officers called an asset to the department and community. Egg-stra, Egg-stra: Kids Hop Down the Bunny Trail

The Easter Bunny made a grand entrance on a big red fire truck at the annual Easter egg hunt in Canonsburg Town Park on Saturday. The event, co-sponsored by the Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Canonsburg Police Department, was a huge success thanks to excited kids and excellent weather. Before the start of the hunt, children of all ages lined up for a photo op with their favorite springtime celebrity. The Easter Bunny posed with hundreds of kids and handed out treats. Mason Jim McPeake volunteered for the event. He stood behind the Easter Bunny and eagerly refilled the bunny’s basket with chocolate when his stash ran low. Canonsburg Mayor David H. The Easter Egg hunt is the only "constant" in Canonsburg. The Saturday before Easter at 10 o'clock on the dot ,the fun begins. I have been going there for three generations, the first generation I was a participant. Thanks to our local firemen and the park committee and all volunteers involved. Cecil Township supervisors will hold a roundtable meeting with MarkWest and others regarding an ordinance they are mulling about the regulation of compressor stations related to the Marcellus Shale industry.
