Tell us which candidates you're backing in the May 21 primary.
Four sitting Canon-McMillan school directors are hoping to retain their posts on the local school board, and one newcomer is also seeking a seat. There are four open seats on the board—two out of Canonsburg Borough and one each from North Strabane and Cecil townships. Current board President Darla Bowman-Monaco has cross-filed as both a Democrat and a Republican and is seeking nomination for the Cecil seat. Another candidate, Ronald Vrana, is seeking the Republican nomination for that seat. Vrana did not cross-file. Fellow current school directors Eric Kline and Paul Scarmazzi are also seeking re-election. State Rep. Jesse White said he personally reached out to PNC Bank officials regarding the closing after a petition circulated to keep the branch open—or at least have a meeting with residents about the closure.
The Cecil branch of PNC Bank is closing Friday—and there is still no word on what will happen to the building. State Rep. Jesse White, D-Cecil, said that many residents he has spoken with seem to believe that another bank will move into the space in PNC's absence. But the lawmaker said that might not necessarily be the case. He said to the best of his knowledge, PNC owns the property. White also said that bank officials have indicated to him that they would like to retain the ATM at the location. "My gut instinct is that the days of that building being a bank are over," he said. "But the ATM may remain." Reached Wednesday, PNC spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said she could not comment on the future of the Cecil branch specifically. "That is not…

The mobile home fire was reported Sunday night.
A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of a blaze that damaged a mobile home in Cecil Township on Sunday night. Cecil Township police said the fire at 74 Wilson Ave. was reported by a passing motorist who saw flames coming from the structure around 9:50 p.m. Sunday. When fire crews from Cecil, Muse and Lawrence arrived, the East side of the home was fully engulfed in flames, police said. No one was injured in the fire—and police said neighbors reported that the mobile home had been vacant for several months. Police on Monday were trying to get in touch with owner George Ondra, who reportedly purchased the home at a tax sale recently. No further information on the fire was immediately available Monday afternoon. Join Patch …
The statement comes after Cecil Township supervisors voted 3-2 to meet privately with the Southpointe-based Marcellus Shale company.
Cecil Supervisor Andy Schrader wanted it on the record: He has no problem meeting with Southpointe-based Marcellus Shale company Range Resources. But it has to be public. "I am totally against private meetings," Schrader said Monday. His statement, which was echoed in a letter to the editor in the Observer-Reporter newspaper, came after the township board of supervisors voted earlier this month to meet with the company privately. Supervisors Elizabeth Cowden, Frank Ludwin and Tom Casciola voted yes on the motion. Schrader and Supervisor Mike Debbis cast the dissenting vote. Cowden had suggested the meeting, saying she hoped it would bring more cooperation instead of litigation. Range has filed several lawsuits against the township in the …
