Prescription Drug Abuse 'Epidemic' Explored at Summit

Local experts and law enforcement officials hosted a drug summit at Canon-McMillan High School Thursday.

The statistics are alarming. Prescription drugs now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined. In 2011, there were 55. And what’s more: Studies indicate that 41 percent of teens think prescription  drugs are “safer” than street drugs. That’s why Canonsburg Mayor David H. Rhome, school officials, the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco and drug treatment specialists and others converged at Canon-McMillan High School Thursday: To tell students there that prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic not only…

Repeat Drug Dealer Convicted, Canonsburg Police Praised for Their Help

Andre Allen Williams guilty of violating federal narcotic laws—thanks in part to an investigation aided by Canonsburg police officers.

After deliberating for six hours, a federal jury this week found Andre Allen Williams guilty of violating federal narcotic laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced—also lauding the Canonsburg Police Department for its help in the investigation that led to the conviction. Andre Allen Williams, 42, of East Hills Apartments, East Hills Drive, Pittsburgh, was tried before Senior United States District Judge Alan N. Bloch in Pittsburgh. The evidence presented at trial established that Williams brought more than $146,000 in cash to a drug deal involving five kilograms of cocaine. Recorded conversations played for the jury showed that this deal was a prelude to another 20-kilogram cocaine deal between Williams and his Mexican-born …

The Peters Township physician faces 11 or more years in prison.

A McMurray doctor, who was accused of illegally prescribing narcotics, pleaded guilty to health care fraud and all related charges in court Tuesday. Oliver Wynn Herndon, 40, of Peters Township, appeared in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh before Judge Arthur Schwab. His attorney Roger Cox and Drug Enforcement Administration representatives—including assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Kaufman—were present to relay his summary of offenses. Herndon, a 1996 graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine, and the parties reached a plea agreement. Schwab said the maximum sentence could be up to 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine and mandatory restitution payments. The agreement states he’d have to acknowledge his responsibility to the …
