The high school is coordinating a food drive—and it's not too late to help out.
Canon-McMillan High School seniors and members of National Honor Society Jared Barton and Nicole Witkowski were seen packing boxes of non-perishables for the Canonsburg Food Bank recently. That's because the Canon-McMillan High School National Honor Society’s annual fall food drive is under way. Loosely based on the popular young adult book, The Hunger Games, the theme for the collection is “Hunger is no game.” Joyce Mason, NHS sponsor, along with the NHS officers, Jennie Brancho, Nicole Witkowski, Brandon Sterling and Matthew Tilley, divided the school into 12 districts with each district represented by a teacher who volunteered to be a Tribute. Principal Dave Helinski, who represents the Capitol, gave each of the 12 teachers a “food …

Fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation draws a lot of participation
During lunch Wednesday at Canon-McMillan High School, students could be heard chanting: “Tape him up. Tape him up.” They were crowded around Principal David Helinski, who allowed students to duct tape him to a pole for charity—four times. Students could purchase pieces of duct tape approximately 3 feet long for a $1 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and wrap the principal with it, hoping to bond him to a pole in the center of the cafeteria. The challenge was to see if students could provide enough tape and put it in the right places to keep Helinksi attached to the pole with duct tape when the chair he was standing on was removed. Apparently the word spread quickly when Helinski fell down in 1.8 seconds after the first lunch period. …

Superintendent Helen McCracken files discrimination complaint.
Canon-McMillan School District has released the details of the settlement agreement between Canon-McMillan High School Principal David Helinski and the defendants—Canon-McMillan School District and Superintendent Helen McCracken—after Patch filed a Right to Know request. The settlement, approved by the school board on Monday night, was made available Wednesday, the same day Patch filed the Right to Know request. The original claims were filed against defendants by Helinski before the EEOC and U.S. District Court of Western Pennsylvania. The defendants denied any alleged claims under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. Pursuant to the agreement, Helinski agreed to release …

Agreement settles two-year dispute with school district.
At a special Canon-McMillan School Board meeting Monday night, the board adopted a resolution to approve a settlement agreement and release of claims from an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charge and civil action regarding a two-year legal issue with high school principal David Helinski. Not related to the parent comments last fall regarding Helinski’s actions surrounding athletes at an underage drinking party, the details of this case are vague, but stem from an administrative investigation two years ago. The fully executed settlement agreement is pending final review of attorney Susan Roberts and release from Helinski, according to the resolution read last night. However, the Observer Reporter is reporting this morning …

Parents asked the school board to reprimand high school principal David Helinski because of discipline actions the administrator took following an underage drinking party in North Strabane where several students were cited.
A group of Canon-McMillan parents expressed their frustration Monday over the discipline handed out by high school Principal David Helinski after a number of students were cited at an underage drinking party earlier this month. Jennifer Carrozza said at Monday's school board meeting that the administration crossed the line and worried about how these types of actions will impact her daughter and other students at the high school. “Our children are influenced daily by our educators, thus, those educators should be expected to exhibit sociably acceptable, ethical and legal behaviors free from their own personal beliefs and behaviors. I feel it is our responsibility to request the school board to reprimand the educators based on fact-finding …

A district couple filed a police report and addressed the Canon-McMillan School Board about an incident that happened Friday after the high school homecoming game—but the Helinskis said harassment and assault never an issue.
Canon-McMillan Athetic Director Guy Montevalco on Monday said despite a police report from the Maletta family to the contrary, high school Principal David Helinski never threatened the position of their son, a football player on the team. He said a report made by Andrew and Polly Maletta to the Canonsburg Police Department, contained an inaccurate portrayal of the conversation that occured. "(Helinski) said, 'Your son's lucky he played,'" Montecalvo said. "But there was no threat." The Malettas filed the report with Canonsburg police, also claiming that Helinski's wife, Maureen, had approached them at the game on several occasion, yelling. The Malettas then attended the Canon-McMillan School Board meeting Monday night, reiterating the …
