Sarris Candies Back in Full Production One Year After Fire

One year ago today, crews responded to a structure fire at the Canonsburg shop. But no worries: The company is back in the saddle, and ready to meet the candy demands for the Easter holiday.

Following a fire one year ago today—Feb 3, 2012—at the Sarris Candies plant in Canonsburg, company President Bill Sarris announced that all is well and that the company is back in full production in preparation for the early Easter holiday. “We got through last Easter with a limited amount of items available due to the fire," Athena Sarris, chief executive officer, said. "We lost a lot of chocolate molds and weren’t able to provide the selection we’ve had in years past." That won't be a problem this year, though. "But this season, we’ll have a huge selection of new bunnies and novelties to fill everyone’s baskets,” she continued. Over the past year, new construction of all devastated areas—including the ice cream parlor and candy store—was…

Gallery: Sarris Candies is Open!

Retail Operations Manager Norm Candelore said, "It's all for the customers."

Easter is a holiday steeped in tradition, and for so many local families, a trip to Sarris Candies for chocolately treats is part of theirs. That tradition can go on unfettered starting today—because the retail shop in Canonsburg is now officially reopened. The store had been closed since a Feb. 3 fire, but the shop was in full swing Thursday, as customers perused everything from chocolate-covered pretzels to chocolate Easter bunnies. Although the day was overcast, Spring looked like it had already arrived at the venerable shop, with pastel colors dominating the interior design. Customers were greeted with oversized stuffed bunnies and at least one fluffy yellow duck at the door—as well as Retail Operations Manager Norm Candelore. "Welcome…

Canonsburg VFD Easter Egg Hunt Was Hopping Saturday

Fire Chief Tim Solobay said the hunt went off without a hitch Saturday.

The rain held off long enough for the Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department to hold its Easter Egg hunt in Town Park Saturday morning. Fire Chief Tim Solobay said the event was well attended. "Rain threatened, but nothing could take the enthusiam out of the morning for the hundreds of children who braved the weather," he said of the event, which is co-sponsored by the borough police department. Town Park was also decorated with balloons provided by Friends of the park. Enjoy these pictures of some of the kids—and Easter Bunny— who came out for the festivities. Editor's Note: Thanks to Solobay for the pictures!
