Literacy Night Thrills Canon-McMillan Students

Elementary-age students took part in the event this week.

There was a lot of horsin’ around at the Frank Sarris Public Library—but it was all in good fun as part of the 2013 Reading Round-Up! Students in kindergarten through fourth grade attending a Canon-McMillan elementary school were invited to the two-night event. The theme for the second annual literacy festival included country western themed stories, games, crafts, music, and prizes. Cowboys and cowgirls of all ages showed up for the event—even Canon-McMillan high school students from the National Honor Society and student council volunteered their time throughout the evening. Just fewer than 200 elementary school students attended, along with their parents, guardians and siblings. A sampling of activities included reading in a horse stall…

There's a lot going on this week. Here are five things you need to know. 1. Canonsburg Council will hold its voting meeting at 7 p.m. tonight—Monday—in the borough building. Among the items for consideration is a motion to accept the retirement of borough Manager Terry Hazlett. For more information about his retirement, click here. 2. Canon-McMillan school directors will hold their agenda meeting at 7 p.m. tonight—Monday—in the district administration building. 3. The Muse Fit Club will meet at the Muse Volunteer Fire Department. Final approval of three-year contracts with employees. 2. Cecil Township supervisors will hold their regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the municipal building. 3. Chi For Health, a combination of exercise and meditation and is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation will be held Wednesday. The session will be held at the Outpatient Care Center-Peters Township. Canonsburg Council meeting at 7 p.m. tonight—Monday, Dec. 10—in the municipal building. The meeting is open to the public. An agenda wasn’t immediately available Friday. North Strabane Township Board of Supervisors will hold its non-legislative meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the municipal meeting. It is open to the public. Two special meetings will precede the meeting. Whose Trees Are These?

The sign says 'fresh cut trees" but not much else is known. In other words: Info wanted!

Dear Canon-McMillan Friends, The signs say “fresh cut trees” and the lot is right behind the Frank Sarris Public Library in Canonsburg. There are trees of various shapes and sizes, some shorter and stouter—some taller and more slim. The lot was also adorned with decorative wreaths for those front doors that mght look a little less festive without them. Two women walked past Monday afternoon and asked me, “Do you know who runs this lot?” And sadly, I did not. “I just saw the signs and figured I would stop by for more information,” I told them. There wasn’t an attendant available. There were no signs for when the lot was open or closed, and there were no price tags of any of the wares. Even some borough officials were unaware of who the lot …

Old-Fashioned Christmas Planned for Saturday

Bring the kids to see Santa and more in Canonsburg this weekend.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, Canonsburg is looking toward the next holiday: Christmas. The borough's annual Old-Fashioned Christmas, featuring the Santa luncheon, will be held Saturday in the downtown area. For the first time, the Santa luncheon will be held at the Frank Sarris Public Library, with seatings at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The $5 ticket includes lunch, a goodie bag and a photo with Santa. Canonsburg Agenda Posted, Council to Act on Library Agreement

Here is the agenda for tonight's Canonsburg Council meeting.

Canonsburg Council meets for its voting meeting at 7 p.m. tonight—Monday—in the borough building. Among the items up for a vote is a 10-year agreement with the Frank Sarris Public Library. Borough Manager Terry Hazlett said the new contract regarding annual payments to the library was presented to council at its meeting last week. It is almost identical to the current contract, which calls for an annual payment of .000320 times the assessed value of property in Canonsburg or $12,000—whichever is greater, he said.
