High School Students Duct Tape Principal for Charity

Fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation draws a lot of participation

During lunch Wednesday at Canon-McMillan High School, students could be heard chanting: “Tape him up. Tape him up.” They were crowded around Principal David Helinski, who allowed students to duct tape him to a pole for charity—four times.  Students could purchase pieces of duct tape approximately 3 feet long for a $1 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and wrap the principal with it, hoping to bond him to a pole in the center of the cafeteria. The challenge was to see if students could provide enough tape and put it in the right places to keep Helinksi attached to the pole with duct tape when the chair he was standing on was removed. Apparently the word spread quickly when Helinski fell down in 1.8 seconds after the first lunch period. …

Canon-McMillan Spirit Week Raises Money for Charity

The principal will get duct taped, a teacher will get a pie in the face and Make-A-Wish will benefit; community donations are also sought for the cause.

It's the end of the school year and Canon-McMillan High School students decided to do something different. Raising money for a good charity is a great idea. What about duct taping the principal or hitting a favorite teacher with a pie in the face? Canon-McMillan students will be doing all three and then some. Teacher Rick Bell’s Leadership 2 classes have organized two spirit weeks full of fun fundraising events with all the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. According to Bell, it costs $3,900 to make one wish come true through the foundation. The school is hoping to raise enough for as many as three wishes. Each day of the spirit weeks will have a theme featuring appropriate apparel: Monday, May 21: College Shirt Day Tuesday, …

Buy a Ticket, Get a Chance to Win a Harley

The North Strabane Fire Department hopes raffling off a motorcycle will help raise as much as $10K.

Over at the North Strabane Township Fire Department, $10 could buy you a Harley Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle. If, of course, you’re lucky. Chief Mark Grimm said the department is now selling raffle tickets for the 2011 bike — which retails for about $25,000. The winning raffle ticket will match the Big Four lottery number drawn on Memorial Day, and he added that sales tax and the cost of the title is already paid. There are three chances to win on each ticket. Grimm also mentioned that the seller of the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 prize, too. He said the money raised will go toward the volunteer side of the department, which hopes to realize between $5,000 and $10,000 from the fundraiser. So ask your friendly neighborhood …
