A two-year term and six-year term on the board are open.
One Democrat incumbent and one Republican who was formerly a supervisor are running for board seats in North Strabane Township this year. Current board chairman Steve Motzer, who's six-year term will be up at the end of 2013, is not seeking re-election. That means that both a two-year term and a six-year term will be up for grabs in the November 2013 general election. Supervisor Bill Brooks, a retired General Electric employee, is seeking the Democratic nomination for both seats in the May 21 primary, while former supervisor Rob Balogh, a network administrator, is seeking the Republican nomination for both seats. After losing a bid for re-election in the last municipal election, Brooks was appointed to fill the supervisor seat vacated when…

Students are learning about the resume and interview process—and township Parks and Recreation Director Greg Sulc has tasked them with a real-life project.
In today’s market, job seekers have to be savvy in regard to both their resumes and their interviews—and real-life experience is imperative. That’s why North Strabane Parks and Recreation Director Greg Sulc and township Supervisor Sonia Stopperich teamed up with Natalie Johnson’s Canon-McMillan High School marketing class. The pair has spoken to one of her classes, explaining the ins and outs of the resume submission and interview process—even setting up a fictitious job position for the students to apply for. Students submitted their cover letters and resumes, which are being reviewed by Sulc and Stopperich. Sulc said the two gave students some helpful hints before submissions were due in. Like lesson one: Be careful what you post on the …

See what fun there is to be had in the park this year.
Greg Sulc said that in its first year, he figured that North Strabane Township's multi-million Municipal Park would "fly under the radar" its first year. But the township's parks and recreation director said he was wrong. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Canon-McMillan School Districts, youth sports foundations and more, the park was well utilized—with tournaments, a health fair, a community day celebration and even a youth sports injury clinic. "That was one of 16 in the entire country," Sulc said. And there's plently more in store for the state-of-the art facilities in its sophomore year—and the season is starting soon. Coming to the park this year is the popular Washington Wine and Jazz Pops! Festival, and Sulc said …

Anyone interested in helping with next year's Community Day's is invited to attend the first planning meeting slated for Thursday.
North Strabane Parks and Recreation Director Greg Sulc said the success of any venture depends on the people you surround yourself with. And while he said his parks and recreation board has done an outstanding job in the first year of the new Municipal Park’s existence, more help is needed as the department expands its offerings in the coming year. “As a director, you can’t do it all,” Sulc said. That’s why he’s putting a call out to township residents to serve as volunteers in 2013. “We will have a lot going on,” he said. “We are going to have more events than we’ve ever had in the township.” And he was clear: He and the board aren’t looking for full-time help. They are looking for residents to volunteer to help with event-specific tasks…

North Strabane municipal park on Wednesday was host to one of only a handful of the clinics nationwide.
A line of soccer enthusiasts wound out of a white tent erected at North Strabane's municipal park Wednesday—all waiting to register for the DePuy Mitek Sports Injury Prevention clinic. The air conditioning inside gave youngsters and their parents a reprieve from the heat and humidity during the registration process, while those already inside sat chatting excitedly with their friends. Some of the kids there even kicked soccer balls among their friends while waiting for the the clinic, hosted by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Professional Soccer Club and Century United of Pittsburgh Football Club, to begin. In preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, DePuy Mitek, the official medical provider of the tournament, is sponsoring 16 such …

The event is only one of four in the country—one that will include participation by an Olympic gold medalist.
North Strabane’s newly unveiled municipal park will be home tomorrow to one of four sports injury clinics in the country. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds Professional Soccer Club and Century United of Pittsburgh Football Club will host the DePuy Mitek Sports Injury Prevention clinic from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at North Strabane Township Sports Complex. Heather Mitts, 2012 gold medalist on the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, will be in attendance at the clinic. In preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, DePuy Mitek, the official medical provider of the tournament, is sponsoring 16 clinics around the world aimed at educating young athletes, parents, trainers, and coaches on how to prevent sports-related injuries in the game of soccer. North …

The park's grand opening just took place last month—but there is more in store for residents.
On a recent Wednesday night, Greg Sulc said he counted more than 70 cars parked at North Strabane’s newly unveiled multi-million municipal park—proof that not only was the amenity’s grand opening last month a rousing success, but that it is growing to be a sought-after place to be. The township’s parks and recreation director said the goal was to create a place where people of all ages could come to enjoy themselves, by providing features such as walking trails, playgrounds and fields. “We’ve accomplished that goal,” Sulc said. But he said the Parks and Recreation Department isn’t stopping there. “Next year we will have a buffet of programming,” Sulc said, adding: “This is not just for North Strabane residents—this is for whoever wants to …

Adam Brock, Washington Wild Things' mascot and Zambelli fireworks highlight the celebration as residents see what park now has to offer.
The newly re-imagined North Strabane Township Municipal Park officially opened to the public on Saturday, June 30, to a crowd consisting of residents, elected officials and perhaps to the ones most excited for the park to open—young kids just wanting to play ball. For a project that has been in the works since 2006, the site of the new park is truly a sight to behold. At one time, it was merely a playground and a baseball field and a giant hillside. Today, that hillside is now the foundation for a multi-purpose field, complete with bleachers and lights, as well as a baseball field, a softball field and a beautiful new playground. There is also a one-mile walking trail around the park. Additionally, the picnic pavilions boast tables and …

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held all day June 30.
Greg Sulc walked along the sidewalk winding through North Strabane’s new multi-million Municipal Park, pointing out everything from the new playground equipment to the bleachers overlooking a synthetic field. With the venue’s grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration quickly approaching, the parks and recreation director has been spending the lion’s share of his time at the facility—which, as of last week, was 95 percent complete. “This is my office,” Sulc said with a laugh. “I have the best office in Washington County.” As for that ribbon-cutting and grand opening slated for June 30? Sulc and the rest of the parks and recreation board want the community to know: They are invited to the celebration, which will include a music …
