Two Canonsburg Middle School Students to be Charged With Possessing Marijuana

The 14-year-old boy will also charged with furnishing drug-free urine.

Two Canonsburg Middle School students will be charged by juvenile petition with possession of marijuana after witnesses told school officials Tuesday that they had witnessed what they believed to be a drug deal during homeroom. According to a Canonsburg police report, the two students said they saw a 14-year-old male classmate hand a 13-year-old female classmate a container in exchange for $20. The witnesses later told police that the girl showed them a suspected bag of marijuana. When the girl was initially confronted by Prinicipal Greg Taranto, she denied accusations she had marijuana, but later gave school officials the bag of the suspected drug. The boy denied possessing or giving marijuana to another student when confronted by …

Letter: Administrator's Presentation on Charter Schools Inaccurate

Robert Fayfich, executive director of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools, said a presentation made to the Canon-McMillan School Board by an administrator last week contained inaccuracies.

To the Editor: Public education is too important to allow blatantly inaccurate statements to stand without correction. Such is the case with the presentation that Canonsburg Middle School Principal Dr. Greg Taranto made to the Canon-McMillan School Board regarding charter schools and legislation that was before the state Legislature last month. Here are a few of the most egregious misstatements of fact: Second, exemption from the Right-to-Know language was not in the final legislation and, even if it was, it would have applied not only to charter schools, but to every municipality and every other public school in the state, including the Canon-McMillan School District. Third, extending charter terms does not mean that under-performing …

Principal Raises Concerns About Pending Charter School Legislation

Canonsburg Middle School Principal Greg Taranto made a presentation about charter schools to the board of directors Monday—and explained pending legislation regarding them should be watched closely.

Dr. Greg Taranto stressed to the Canon-McMillan School Board earlier this week that when it comes to charter schools and pending legislation to reform them: “We have to start speaking up.” Taranto, principal of the Canonsburg Middle School, on Monday updated the board on Senate Bill 1115—one advocates have said will reform charter schools and allow school choice. But Taranto reiterated: “There’s not much reform going on.” After explaining the concept of so-called “brick and mortar” charter schools and cyber charter schools, the administrator laid out a few concerns he said he had about the pending legislation. If passed, he said the way in which charters are approved would change, among other things. Taranto said that under current state …

How dare teachers contact parents when a student does not do their homework. To think that they would have the nerve to call you and let you know how your child is doing. Are you kidding me? How did this article turn into an attack on teachers? Perhaps you should work with your child on organization skills and maybe, just maybe, they could be responsible enough to bring their homework home with …   more ›

Principal Greg Taranto wrote on the CMS website.

I was actually thinking about Amy Barbarino the other day and wondered if she was still at the middle school! I moved to Canonsburg in 8th grade and she used to be my Elementary School Librarian when I used to go to Washington Park. That's great, good for her!   more ›

Middle School Anti-Bullying Project Named 'Video of the Day'

The video parody to the song 'Down' by Jay Sean was created last year.

Consider a rap parody video created by Canonsburg Middle School "the cream of the crop." SchoolTube, Inc. did. CMS staff last school year participated in a teacher-created, anti-bullying video parody to the song “Down” by Jay Sean—a video used to inspire students to help prevent bullying. A day after students returned back to school this year (the academic term began Monday for Canon-Mac), the video—titled "Stop Putting Me Down: CMS Anti-Bullying Sing-Off"—was named the "Video of the Day" by the St. Louis-based video-sharing site. Lauren Paddick, an eighth-grade English teacher, and Marcie Killmeyer, a special education teacher, wrote the lyrics. The parody was sung by Jill Dennick, an eighth-grade social studies teacher, and rapped by …

Principal Offers 7 Tips to Ease Into the School Year

Dr. Greg Taranto, principal of the Canonsburg Middle School stresses nutrition, routine.

With school right around the corner, it is time for students (and parents) to start getting ready for the new school year! The new school year officially starts on Monday, Aug. 27 for students in the Canon-McMillan School District. Here are seven tips to help you get started off to a great school year: 1. Nutrition: With the hustle and bustle of today’s students’ lives, a solid nutritional base is more important than ever. This starts with a healthy breakfast. Some students may go four hours from the point they walk in the building before eating lunch. A balanced breakfast will give them the energy and focus to get through their morning routine. And speaking of routines… 2. Routine: Students thrive best when they have a routine during the …

There's No 'Shushing' in This Library

Canonsburg Middle School officials presented information to board members this week about the Library Media Center—one that continues to advance technologically.

The Canonsburg Middle School Library—now known as the Library Media Center— isn’t what it used to be. Sure, there might still be book-lined shelves and plenty of periodicals, but these days, there’s more of an emphasis on technology, and how to help educate students on information technology using its website—which includes a blog and tons of other features for students to use, as well as other media. “The card catalog is gone and so is the shushing,” Amy Barbarino, library media specialist, told Canon-McMillan School directors during a presentation on the evolution of the facility, and its role in the education process. “What we do is active learning,” she said. “It’s not just a quiet place for books on a shelf.” She said that while using…

Principal Lauded for Award, 'Selfless Leadership'

The Canon-McMillan School Board on Monday honored Canonsburg Middle School Principal Greg Taranto for his recent distinction as 'Principal of the Year.'

After the plaques were presented, and the applause had waned, Canon-McMillan School Director Paul Scarmazzi had something to say to recently named ‘Principal of the Year’ Greg Taranto—the head administrator at Canonsburg Middle School who was honored for the distinction at the board's meeting Monday. Scarmazzi thanked Taranto, describing him a “selfless leader.” “We’re very fortunate to have you—genuinely,” the school director said. “I can’t say enough about your passion and your vision.” Taranto thanked the board and admininstration, and lauded the district and community, saying, “I love that middle school through and through.” Taranto, who has been principal of Canonsburg Middle School for seven years, was named the 2012 Pennsylvania …
