The American Red Cross has sent several volunteers from the South Hills of Pittsburgh to the places hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy. The Red Cross announced that it sent five volunteers, including a woman from Heidelberg, to Morgantown last week to help people affected by the large snowfall in the rural areas of West Virginia. Rose Marie Malizio of Heidelberg, Lauren Pucci of the South Hills, Cindy Chmel of Claysville, Ken Brown of South Hills, and John Breitweiser of South Park, were sent to West Virginia on Oct. 31. That area suffered severe power outages from the heavy snowfall, prompting many residents in rural areas to evacuate to shelters until electricity was restored. The Red Cross has mobilized 1,700 disaster workers from all over…
Sen. Tim Solobay talks Hurricane Sandy (and how deductibles associated with storm damage will be waived), free flu shots for first responders and more in his weekly column.
Hurricane Sandy, billed by some meteorologists as the “Storm of the Century,” has proven how far we’ve come in preparedness in the last century. Days before, I could see convoys of utility trucks and construction vehicles heading east where the most damage was anticipated. There are still widespread problems and numerous tragedies, but practice and preparation meant that this century’s storm didn’t cause as much hardship as many storms from the past century. That preparedness also means hardship for families of workers and volunteers who left this week to head to storm-damaged New Jersey. We appreciate their sacrifice and we understand that the next time it might be we who need the help. Free Flu Shots for First Responders The Centerville…

Employees help out, and you can, too
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could …
One Canon-McMillan Patch reader found this beauty out of last week's storm.
Canon-McMillan Patch reader Bonnie Sodini sent us this picture, which is our Photo of the Day. "With all the devastation from Sandy, there was one pretty result," she wrote. "We had quite a waterfall on Canonsburg Lake (I live right on the lake)." Thanks again, Bonnie! Editor's Note: If you have a picture you'd like to submit as the Photo of the Day, please feel free to upload it to this article or email it to me at amanda.gillooly@patch.com.

Pull out the grill one last time before winter and and give this savory marinade a shot!
Now that we’ve made it through Hurricane Sandy and the sun is finally shining, I thought this would be the perfect weekend to cook out one last time before putting the grill away for the winter. This recipe offers grilled chicken with a savory marinade that combines fresh lime juice and chipotle chile. So pull out the grill one last time and give this Fusion Grilled Chicken a shot! Start by pounding the chicken to 1/4-inch thickness. In a shallow dish, whisk oil, tequila, lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire, ginger, chile, and salt. Reserve 1/3 cup of this marinade, then put the chicken in dish, turn to coat, and marinate 30 minutes. Then grill chicken over medium heat (you can hold your hand 1 to 2 inches above grill level only 4 to 5 …
