Letter to the Editor: Local Public Transportation Subpar

These letter writers ask: When your bus is consistently about 20 minutes late, how reliable is it?

Dear Editor,   I'm so frustrated with being late for work all the time. What do you do when the bus you take to get to work every single day is consistently over a half-hour late from only one bus driver? People will say, "Why don't you just walk?" Well, what if you walk 4.2 miles to your job and you already have to do that every single night coming back home because no buses in your area run that late? Is that really the best option? It's bad enough to be on your feet for eight-nine hours a day, plus the walk back home. I would like to think not. Over the past several months, Washington City Transit has been becoming consistently late with its Metro route, which travels from Washington through Meadowlands, Canonsburg and Houston, to …

What have Tim Solobay and Brandon Neuman done for transit in Washington? Not a single thing. Solobay will only help fund toll roads and fire trucks and Neuman will be for everything but does nothing. Time to ship them out (along with Daley and White) in 2014 for some fiscally conservative leadership.   more ›

Letter: 'It’s Time for Partisan Party Politics to be Put Aside'

Sen. Tim Solobay writes, 'A good idea is a good idea, people don’t care from where it came, they want, they expect, and they deserve results.'

The election is over but like a contentious football game between archrivals, the post-event ranting is still going strong. The real concern at this point is not with what has already transpired, but more so with where we are right now and where we are headed. Ever since I was first elected to the State House of Representatives I have had a pretty simple philosophy for getting legislation passed. I never counted on cunning cryptic strategies or parliamentary gamesmanship or the setting of traps to force members to vote a certain way. I take a much more straight ahead and simplistic strategy—I reach across the aisle to work together with my colleagues. That was my approach then and remains my approach now. When people keep fighting merely …

Victoria, perhaps you should make public the people you "know for a fact" have an issue. That way if the Senator does have something he can do or just has some repsonsiblity, then his constituents will know.   more ›

Letter: School Director Blasts Op-Ed Piece

He looked forward to reading an op-ed piece in the Observer-Reporter, only to realize the author used his 'favorite Shakespearean play to push the conservative idea that public education has been 'feminizing' boys for decades.'

As an avid fan of the Bard in general and the play "Henry V" in particular, I looked forward to reading the op-ed piece by David Brooks titled "If Henry V were in school today," which appeared in the Sunday, July 15 edition of the Observer-Reporter newspaper (and other publications). However, only three paragraphs into the article, I realized that Mr. Brooks had taken the opportunity to use my favorite Shakespearean play to push the conservative idea that public education has been "feminizing" boys for decades. Mr. Brooks argued that if Prince Hal was in an American (presumably public) school today, then the system of education would drive the "rambunctious" nature of his character out of him. The rest of the piece goes on to suggest that …

Isn't childhood filled with risks? Then again, my children, who are in the Canon Mac school district, spend most of their recess playing on black top because those in charge cannot figure out who to let the kids use the soccer fields or to be willing to teach the kids to play safely. i cannot count the number of times I ask my children what they did for recess and the answer was 'watch so and so …   more ›

Letter: 30-Year Reunion Being Planned

Letter writer Linda Novak wants the C-M class of 1982 to know the details.

My name is Linda Novak and currently a small group of us are planning the 30th anniversary of the Canon-McMillan Class of 1982! I am trying to get word out to all classmates that there will be a reunion on Sunday, Sept. 2. If turnout is good, we are also considering a small cocktail party on Saturday Sept. 1. Our main goal is too find out who would be interested in attending. Costs would run $40-to $60-a-person for the dinner, which is currently being planned at Dave & Busters. No contracts have been signed, so please respond with reasonable alternatives that can still make the reunion a special time. For more information contact canonmac82@aol.com. - Linda Novak, Canon-McMillan Patch reader Editor's Note: If you have something on your …

Letter to the Editor: Treatment of Canonsburg Roads is Terrible

Canonsburg resident John K. Mathues said Canonsburg roads are often slick and dangerous—and he asks borough officials to be more diligent.

Amanda, I wanted to write you and others at the Patch to let you know how upset I am about the current treatment of roads in Canonsburg during wintry weather.  I will copy and paste an email I sent to borough Manager Terry Hazlett and Mayor David Rhome: Mr. Terry Hazlett and Mayor Rhome, I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of the borough of Canonsburg. I work during the very early morning hours for part of my work week, which requires me to leave my house at approximately 3:30 a.m.  This is what I did this morning: I proceeded to drive down Cecil St, and I found a very treacherous and icy road. I made sure I was in low gear and going at a slow rate of speed, however due to the grade of the road my car eventually picked up speed. I …

Letter to the Editor: Corbett Marcellus Shale Plan Falls Short

Letter writer Channing Press said more must be done to help protect human health, the environment and infrastructure.

Dear Editor, In Amanda Gillooly’s article, Gov. Corbett Sets Forth Marcellus Shale Plan, she outlines Corbett’s proposal set forth on gas drilling. Corbett’s proposal fails to cover the environmental and health risks that Marcellus Shale drilling poses. Marcellus Shale Drilling is dumping millions of gallons of fracking fluid and waste water into our water system. It is projected to increase the levels of ozone in the atmosphere as well as increase other air pollutants, in an area with already some of the worst air quality in the nation, posing countless health risks. Unknown chemicals and toxins are infiltrating our water supply impacting the health of Pennsylvania’s residents. A stronger plan that protects human health, infrastructure, …

Letter: Animal Shelter Board's Recent Actions Disturbing

In her letter to the editor, Faye Klein said recent moves by the Washington County Humane Society have her scratching her head.

Usually a story of an injured or abused dog rallies the public to the aid of an animal shelter. Rarely does a report of malfeasance by the leadership overseeing the operation of an animal shelter generate such interest. It is time to sound the alarm when rules are arbitrarily created, modified, ignored and/or eliminated. One can only come to the conclusion that this is what the Washington Area Humane Society Board of Directors was doing when it recently instituted a cut-off date for WAHS memberships 31 days prior to the annual members’ meeting where they can vote to elect board members. For 11 months of the year, sitting board members can approve or deny board applicants and fill vacant seats for whatever length of time remains in a term …

I was at the meeting and I only personally knew one person and that was Michelle Bruce. In my opinion Michelle and the Vet were by far the most qualified people up for board seats, including the members on the board. The fact Michelle did not garner enough votes from the people in the room, clearly tells me something was amiss. I am sorry to say, I will not be giving a donation to the shelter at …   more ›
