National Weather Service Warns of Freezing Rain, Icy Roads

NWS issues winter weather advisory.

Expect freezing rain and ice accumulations of about a tenth of an inch on Friday. That's the word from the National Weather Service. It issued a winter weather advisory that is in effect from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The freezing rain is expected to begin between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and end between 3 and 6 p.m. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous travel conditions because of ice-covered roads. Winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph are also forecast. A winter weather advisory means freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.

More Snow Possible This Week in Canon-McMillan Area

Didn't Phil say it was gonna be an early spring? Because the weather forecast for later this week definitely sounds like winter.

On Monday, it was in the 40s, with plenty of sunshine. Today? Things are gonna look a little different. Rain and snow showers are expected after 2 p.m., with about a half-inch of accumulation possible. After 3 a.m. Wednesday we could see another half-inch of precipitation. Then? "A frontal boundary will push into the area Thursday night into Friday, bringing a wintry mix to the area. Light accumulations of snow and ice area possible with this system," according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service. National Weather Service forecasts hazardous travel conditions.

Two Clipper-type systems will mean lots of snow is coming to western Pennsylvania this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. A winter weather advisory for snow is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Sunday. The weather service forecasts snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches; those totals could go as high as 6 to 10 inches in the higher ridge elevations. The snow will begin mid-morning Saturday and end Sunday evening, with the heaviest snow coming Saturday afternoon into midday Sunday, NWS states on its website. Bitter Cold Moving Into Pittsburgh Region

You better bundle up this week as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to move into Pittsburgh. There is also a chance of snow Monday and Tuesday in the South Hills.

Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said that he expected the bitter temperatures to arrive in the South Hills on Tuesday. Sims said the middle of the week would have lows in single digits and highs in the teens. That forecast was backed up by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. I just came across this report on the WPXI website. It's something that I totally agree with. According to them we would need 8 feet of snow to replenish the groundwater enough from the drought conditions of the past few years. Winter Storm Warning Issued for Washington County

As many as 5 inches of snow could fall today.

It might not be a white Christmas, but it could be a snowy day after. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning through Thursday morning. As much as 5 inches of snow accumulation is possible—with the white stuff falling at a rate of an inch an hour or more, according to the NWS website. "Snow will develop by mid-morning. A period of very heavy snow is likely from mid-morning into early this afternoon. Precipitation will taper to very light snow or freezing drizzle this evening," according to the weather statement. Western Pennsylvania is expected to receive between a half-inch to just under an inch of snow by the time most people are waking up to head to work.
