Winter Weather Warning Runs Through 1 p.m.

Police report that Interstate 70 near Belle Vernon is closed because of icy conditions, but Washington County 911 reports only one accident countywide as of early Saturday morning.

This story was updated at 10:11 a.m. to include information about Canonsburg and an update about the Interstate 70 closure. A winter storm warning remains in effect through 1 p.m. today—and first responders warn motorists to be vigilant on icy roadways. The Southwest Regional Police Department sent out an alert Saturday morning advising that Interstate 70 eastbound from Belle Vernon was closed to all traffic. But a Washington County 911 supervisors early Saturday said that, countywide, there was only one minor accident in Charleroi, although the roads remain icy. Snow Expected Today, Freezing Rain Tomorrow

The National Weather Service said snow showers are expected around rush hour.

No need to scurry off to the grocery store to buy the obligatory milk, bread and toilet paper: National Weather Service Meteorologist Lee Hendricks said today’s snowfall shouldn’t be a big deal. With light snow this morning and a chance of about an inch this afternoon, driver’s should nonetheless exercise caution on the roads during rush hour—which is when the flakes should really begin flying. Also on tap today? Wind gusts of up to 35 mph, he said. Another inch of the white stuff is expected overnight, when the temperature is expected to hover in the teens. But tomorrow? It might get a little ugly. Snow is expected to turn to sleet come sunset Friday, and Hendricks said that will likely spur the National Weather Service to issue a warning…

Flakes are expected to begin falling around 10 a.m., with “areas of blowing snow possible.” And that weather may snarl traffic, so exercise caution on your daily commute to and from work, or wherever your travels take you today. “Dangerous travel conditions are expected due to quickly falling temperatures icing over roads followed by strong winds and snow showers,” the National Weather Services indicated on its website. Snow Expected Today and Tonight

The National Weather Service in Moon Township said there is a chance of 1 inch during the day, and another 1 to 2 inches tonight.

Look out snow lovers in Canonsburg, Cecil and North Strabane: The area is expected to be blanketed with the white stuff today and tomorrow. The National Weather Service in Moon Township reports that while there is no inclement weather warning in place, there is a chance our area could see less than an inch of snow during the day today. The temperature this Monday is expected to hover around 29 degrees before dipping down to about 18 tonight—when there is a chance for another 1 to 2 inches of new snowfall. Those showers could persist through Tuesday morning (mostly before 9 a.m.), with wind gusts of up to 28 mph expected. Editor's Note: We've been waiting all year for some pretty snow pictures. If the snowfall pans out, send us your winter …

Snow Expected Today

An inch or two could accumulate on grassy areas during the evening rush hour.

That biting rain falling this morning will likely turn into snow later this afternoon, and the amount of accumulation likely will depend on which side of the city you’re located. Dan Krzywiecki, the chief meteorologist for Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said the rain will gradually change over into a snowy mix before turning to all snow around rush hour. However, with warmer than usual temperatures this week, he expected the only accumulation to be in grassy areas. “The ground temps are well above freezing, but as the air temperatures cool and approach freezing–that will be some time later this evening–there could be some slippery spots,” he said. “Plus any water on the roads after the event could turn to ice.” He expected …
