Canon-McMillan School District is still without a high school varsity head football coach nearly five months after the position was vacated. The school board scheduled interviews with 11 applicants, and interviewed eight of those in mid-March. But school officials said Thursday that the job description was reposted recently, with a note that former candidates need not reapply. At the direction of the board, the head varsity coaching position will be a stand-alone one—with no promise of a teaching or other job associated with it. The position was vacated in November, when the board accepted the resignation of then-varsity head football coach Tim Sohyda by a vote of 5-4. One school official source said, "We are back to square one."

'He was driven out,' one school board member said Monday.
The Canon-McMillan School Board on Monday accepted the resignation of the district’s varsity head football coach by a vote of 5-4—but not before one board member said he felt it was necessary to let it be publicly known that Tim Sohyda "was driven out." “We have certain people in our community that took it upon themselves to recruit a new football coach with no authority,” said school Director Joe Zupancic, who added that he believed that action interferes with the rights of the board. Zupancic, who voted 'no' on Sohyda’s resignation, described what led to it as “reprehensible.” “It’s absolutely outrageous,” Director Eric Kline then said. Kline also voted no on the resignation. Here’s who retired, was hired and who resigned: In other business, the board appointed Peacock Keller as the district's solicitor effective at the December reorganization meeting. The firm will replace Basso, Vreeland and Associates. The board also appointed Bill Andrews of Andrews & Price as special counsel for negotiations with the Canon-McMillan Education Association.
