The Guy's Guide to Valentine's Day (from the Gals at Patch)

Your Valentine's Day Night Cap Guide

Grab a drink at one of these great options after your date.

A great Valentine’s Day date has to end with the perfect night-cap. Here are a few options throughout the region where you and your special someone can top off the night with a drink or two. Hint: It does not involve Town Tavern on the South Side or Rumshakers—those are both great bars, don't get me wrong, but hey, there's a time and a place for everything! Dish Osteria and Bar—South Side, 128 S. 17th Street This intimate bar and restaurant has a wide range of cocktails to choose from and has a great ambiance. The lighting is perfect for ending your Valentine’s Day date. My favorite drink from this option is a mojito—they’re fresh, light and unforgettable! Rivertowne Inn—Verona, 500 Jones St. This low-key spot is a nice option to end the …

Cook for Your Lady this Valentine's Day

Let your special someone sit back, relax and enjoy some delicious food this Valentine's Day.

Women love a man who can cook! Let's face it, if you're married or dating someone, chances are your lady is the one doing the cooking. If you're the cook, we're jealous! There's something romantic about when a man makes us a home-cooked meal. When my boyfriend cooks for me, my instinct is to try to help out. When he tells me to sit down and relax, it makes me feel special. So guys, instead of going out to a crowded restaurant, make Valentine's Day a special evening at home. Dress up and have music playing in the background! As far as a meal, I'd suggested personalizing it a little bit. Do you know what her favorite food is? Did you enjoy a special meal one time that you could recreate? Three years ago, my boyfriend and I went to San …

A Guide to Valentine's Day Mixtapes: What Songs Would You Include?

There's nothing like a good love song to win over your girl's heart. Help us make the perfect playlist!

A night out, a dozen roses, a nice piece of jewelry, a thoughtful Valentine's Day card—these are all expected of you on this special holiday, men. Spice things up a bit this year and make a special playlist to play in the background of a dinner at home or the drive to the restaurant. Go old school, burn the playlist to a CD and wrap it up as a gift so your special someone has something she can pop in while she's driving to work the next day. Sure, it's a great idea you say, but what songs are going to win the heart of your Valentine? Take a moment and think, guys. What songs have a special meaning to your relationship? If you're married, don't forget to add your first dance song. Mine was "Make You Feel My Love," by Adele. If your lady is …

Your Guide to Valentine's Day Gifts

Want to give your special someone a Valentine’s gift, but not sure what to give? The Patch gals have a few suggestions.

Valentine’s Day gifts are tricky, because gifts on this day seem to imply so much more than gifts given on any random Tuesday. Whether you’re buying for girlfriends or just friends, the woman you just met or the woman you’ve been with for 50 years, here are a few suggestions for successful Valentine’s Day gift giving. Flowers Flowers are the gold standard of Valentine’s Day gifts, but they don’t necessarily have to be given out of undying love. Various rose colors have different meanings (yellow, for example, signifies friendship). Roses are the classic, but if you have a daisy lover or tulip enthusiast on your mind, don’t be afraid to change it up! If you go for flowers, check out your local florist (there are plenty great local florists …

Gentlemen: There's More to Valentine's Day Than Red Roses

Three local florists weigh in on what to order your sweetheart for Valentine's Day.

Malone Flower Shop Manager Jan Taylor said a dozen red roses are nice, but that when it comes to Valentine’s Day, there’s more to gifting than red and white. But men still seek out the holiday staple, though, she said, “because that’s what they know.” So gentleman, listen up: Taylor said there are tons of other options for your sweetie at your local flower shops. One tip from the Canonsburg shop? Mix it up a little bit! “I think a vase with mixed flowers is so pretty,” Taylor said. “There are gorgeous hydrangea, lilies and snapdragons.” Deborah Carso, owner of Crossroad Florist in Peters, agreed. And she said the special gift for the woman in your life on Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily even need to be a vase of posies. "A lot of women…

A Guide to Valentine's Day Greetings

Want to write something special in that card and don't know what? Don't worry, we have you covered. Read on.

To use a sports cliché: Writing a Valentine’s Day card message can be a tough place to play. One of my ex-boyfriends proved that when he signed his with “Smiles, Johnny” (name changed to protect the clueless). Smiles? Yes, “Smiles.” And as any lady will tell you: That just doesn’t cut it. So as a quote and poetry fanatic, I decided to help you gentlemen out with your cards this year. Below are some suggestions for you when you take a pen to Hallmark Card this Valentine’s Day: If She Loves Poetry While there are many quotes out there for the poets among us, I recommend this one, which I rediscovered while going though old notebooks from college. I liked it just as much the second time around: “I do not mind one day lying in a field, or …
