North Strabane to Expand Recreation Offerings, Seeks Volunteers

Anyone interested in helping with next year's Community Day's is invited to attend the first planning meeting slated for Thursday.

North Strabane Parks and Recreation Director Greg Sulc said the success of any venture depends on the people you surround yourself with. And while he said his parks and recreation board has done an outstanding job in the first year of the new Municipal Park’s existence, more help is needed as the department expands its offerings in the coming year. “As a director, you can’t do it all,” Sulc said. That’s why he’s putting a call out to township residents to serve as volunteers in 2013. “We will have a lot going on,” he said. “We are going to have more events than we’ve ever had in the township.” And he was clear: He and the board aren’t looking for full-time help. They are looking for residents to volunteer to help with event-specific tasks…

Statewide Roadside Cleanup Planned, Volunteers Needed

The Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania starts Thursday.

PennDOT is seeking volunteers for this year’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania, which begins Thursday and runs through May 31. “Cleanup events like this have been a great success in improving the quality of life for Pennsylvanians by creating cleaner roadsides and communities,” said Secretary Barry Schoch. “Many dedicated residents return year after year to show their support, and I encourage more Pennsylvanians to show pride in our state through these great opportunities.” Interested volunteers from Canonsburg, Cecil, North Strabane and beyond can find a listing of cleanup events, resources for organizing a cleanup group and other information at www.gacofpa.org. There will be beers. And brats. And this year, the Bavarian Oktoberfest celebration will also feature its first bride (with a wedding celebration to cap the event). What it still needs? You. The committee overseeing the three-day celebration has put out a call to volunteers, sending us this message: "Oktoberfest is the most labor intensive fund raiser that the Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce produces. Each year, the committee needs more help and volunteers as we continue to grow and expand. Through the years, we have purchased more equipment and the number of vendors has increased. Two vacancies on the township's parks and recreation board need filled.

Two resignations from the North Strabane Township Parks and Recreation Board have created vacancies supervisors want to fill fast. The vacancies were announced by township Manager Frank Siffrinn during the board's non-legislative meeting Tuesday. He asked that any township resident interested in serving as a volunteer on the board to submit a letter of interest. Those letters can be sent to: North Strabane Township, 1929 Route 519 South, Canonsburg, PA 15317. Canonsburg General Hospital: Volunteers Needed

Help is wanted at the Snack Shop and at the Outpatient Care Center.

If you or anyone you know is considering volunteer work, contact Canonsburg General Hospital. The hospital is in need of adult volunteers to work in the hospital’s snack shop and the new Outpatient Care Center in Peters Township. Those interested in volunteering in the snack and gift shop would help by serving refreshments and selling merchandise. Cecil Township: Volunteers Needed

The board of supervisors is seeking applicants for a seat on the township's parks and recreation board.

The Cecil Townshp Board of Supervisors is looking for a volunteer to serve on its parks and recreation board. Supervisors on Monday accepted the resignation of Eric McAdams, which created the vacancy. The board consists of seven members appointed by the supervisors for five-year terms.  The Parks and Recreation Board oversees several events during the course of the year, including an Easter egg hunt, classic car show, fall festival, lunch with Santa and other festivities. Scheduling of the township's ball fields is also handled by this board. It may also recommend additions or updates to the parks for the benefit of all township residents.
