In the first half alone, Altavilla completed eight of nine passes for 240 yards and both TDs. Canon-Mac Lacrosse Ends Season Play

Defeat to Quaker Valley wraps up a season that puts team in good position for next year.

By Gary W. Beam The Canon-McMillan lacrosse season came to end last night at Canon-Mac Stadium as the Quaker Valley Quakers dominated the Big Macs, posting a 14-4 victory and claiming the prize of a playoff berth in the upcoming WPIAL Division II playoffs. Missing the playoffs comes as a great disappointment to the players, coaches and supporters of the team after a very successful 13-5 overall season record. The Big Macs dropped their final four games, three of which were division games, with opponents averaging nearly 12 goals per game. A win in any one of those games would have given Canon-Mac its first playoff appearance since Big Macs lacrosse became a WPIAL-sanctioned sport. The evening started out as most expected with a very tight …

Baldwin Highlanders Defeat Big Macs 8-7

Chance to win WPIAL playoff berth denied; 'In the Senior Spotlight' features three more senior players.

By Gary W. Beam An old adage states that opportunity only knocks once, it will not come again. The Canon-McMillan lacrosse team learned, first-hand, how incorrect this saying is. An opportunity to clinch a playoff berth in the WPIAL Division 2-Section 1 playoffs slipped through their fingers last night at Canon-Mac Stadium as the Baldwin Highlanders defeated the Big Macs, 8-7 in overtime. In six of the last eight Canon Mac games, one goal has separated the victor from the loser and of those six, four have gone into overtime. Baldwin got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first two minutes and 10 seconds of the game. But as has been their trademark, the Big Macs battled back and, after trailing 4-3 at the half, tied the game on a…

P.I.A.A. to Vote on Schedule Change

All varsity sports except football may lose two games.

In effort to ease the burden of strained school budgets, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association is considering a move that would eliminate two games from all varsity schedules except football and spare district dollars on the cost of transportation and officials.   The 31-member state sports association will vote in less than two weeks—when the P.I.A.A. convenes on May 25 and 26 in conjunction with state track championships—whether or not to reduce athletic schedules for the impending school years.   “Knowing that many districts are facing financial strains due to (Gov. Tom) Corbett’s proposed budget, the association is looking for ways to help districts save on expenses,” said Melissa Mertz, assistant executive director of …
