Congrats to the Canonsburg Middle School Math Counts Team, which came in second place at the recent Math Counts competition held at Washington & Jefferson College. Math Counts is a math enrichment club sponsored by Mr. Randy Clonan, CMS math teacher.

Area Middle and High School Students to Perform, Compete at W&J’s Annual German Day

Students from Canon-McMillan will be among the 350 participating.

At least 350 students from more than a dozen middle and high schools in the region—including those from Canon-McMillan—will perform, recite, create and write, all in German, during Washington & Jefferson College’s annual German Day today, Thursday, March 7 in the Olin Fine Arts Center and The  Howard J. Burnett Center’s Yost Auditorium. “German Day is an academic and artistic competition revolving around the German language and culture,” said Cathy Altmeyer, professor in modern languages at W&J. “Area students prepare for months for this event and perform plays and musical numbers, recite poetry, create art and write essays in German. Canon-McMillan and Washington & Jefferson to Host Financial Aid Night

The event takes place Nov. 15.

Washington & Jefferson College will join Canon-McMillan High School counselors to present a college workshop for 11th and 12th grade students and parents. Charlene Bedillion, assistant director of financial aid at Washington & Jefferson College, will be the keynote speaker at the college workshop on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Canon-McMillan High School auditorium. Topics to be covered include the college selection process, financial aid, and scholarship resources. In addition, Washington & Jefferson admissions staff will engage the audience in mock applicant selection. News Nearby: Death of Washington & Jefferson Student Under Investigation

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said the manner of death for Timothy McNerney is pending an investigation.

The death of a student at Washington & Jefferson College Thursday is under investigation. Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said in a release that Timothy McNerney, of Robinson Road, Butler, was discovered at College and Maiden in the city at 4:42 a.m. Thursday. He was taken to the Washington County Hospital emergency room, where he later died, according to the Observer-Reporter newspaper. The death is being treated as suspicious, Warco said in a release. The cause of death is pending an autopsy and the manner of death is pending an investigation. No further details were immediately available Thursday morning. Marionette Performance Kicks Off Arts Series Season at Washington & Jefferson College

The 2012-13 Arts Season at Olin Fine Arts Center opens Oct. 9.

Washington & Jefferson College’s 2012-13 Arts Series season at Olin Fine Arts Center opens Oct. 9 with a performance by The Cashore Marionettes. “This year’s Arts Series takes us from classical to contemporary—from an American Shakespeare Center-production to duets from operetta and Broadway, from marionettes to a PBS mainstay musician,” Dan Shaw of the Olin Fine Arts Center said. “With a high-energy Celtic troupe to screenings of award-nominated short subject films, our coming season is diverse enough for everyone’s taste.” Season tickets for all six Arts Series events are $48 for general admission, $38 for senior citizens older than 60 years of age, W&J alumni and non-W&J students, and $28 for children 12 years of age and younger. …

Summit Tackles 'Epidemic Levels' of Prescription Drug Abuse, Addiction

U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton said prescription drug abuse and addiction in western Pennsylvania, and across the country, “is at epidemic levels”—and this week announced details of a summit slated for later this month that aims to combat the trend. The Western Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Abuse Summit, which includes two free programs, is sponsored by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General. Chris and Ashley Duff of Monongahela, stars of “Extreme Couponing”—one of the most buzz-worthy shows on the popular channel TLC—are coming to Washington & Jefferson College to share their techniques and expertise in saving money at the store.  The Duffs, winners of the spin-off show, “Extreme Couponing All-Stars,” will provide a public lecture at 5 p.m. today in the Howard J. PA Parks to Allow More Access to Family Pets

By Sen. Tim Solobay Pennsylvania’s state parks are trying out a new practice of allowing pets in previously restricted areas, including cabins, cottages and yurts. The program is in response to many requests from Pennsylvanians to allow them to bring their pets camping. Seven state parks will now allow dogs in designated cabins and camping cottages. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has also continued to expand campsite availability to pet owners.
