Former Washington County Judge Accused of Stealing Cocaine

Paul Pozonsky was charged with myriad crimes Thursday morning, including theft and obstructing the administration of the law.

A former Washington County Judge has been accused of misappropriating cocaine that was submitted as evidence in drug cases he presided over. Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane announced Thursday that criminal charges against retired Washington County Common Pleas Judge Paul Pozonsky had been filed. She said the case was presented to a statewide investigating grand jury, which recommended the charges against Pozonsky, who retired suddenly last June. Kane released the following statement: "In May 2011, Judge Pozonsky began to request that police bring to his courtroom the controlled substances—usually cocaine-- that had been confiscated in drug cases, according to investigators. The controlled substances would be entered into evidence and …

Turnout for Tuesday's Primary is 'Very Light' in Washington County

Washington County Elections Director Larry Spahr said election results should be tabulated by 11:30 p.m.

Washington County Elections Director Larry Spahr said his department is dealing with the normal glitches that come with a primary election. There were some battery malfunctions, there were some voting machines that needed to be rebooted, and there were some registered Independents who attempted to cast ballots. "We're just having our normal problems," he said. The only major problem reported, he said, was at one of the Canonsburg polling places. Spahr said the doors of the First Street Elementary School polling place were about 20 minutes late opening while the county office rerouted someone to work at the location after nobody showed up. He reiterated that the polls close at 8 p.m., and he indicated that results should be tabulated by 11:…

I was going to vote for Frank Egizio today, but his supporters were total jerks- yelling and saying horrible things about the other candidates. Kim Rozanc's loud mouth probably cost Egizio 20 votes by herself.   more ›

Legislature Passes Property Tax Reassessment Reform—Now What?

The battle over property tax reassessment in Washington County has been going on for five years.

The battle over property tax reassessment in Washington County has been going on for five years now. Amidst all the fighting, the only thing nearly everyone involved could agree on was the inability of the state legislature to ever actually pass any meaningful reforms on how counties perform reassessments. Well guess what? The most comprehensive reassessment reforms in over 50 years have cleared the State House and Senate and are heading for the Governor’s signature. Senate Bill 66, a bill containing legislative language written by a bipartisan group of local legislators including myself, Brandon Neuman and Rick Saccone, is the culmination of years of exhaustive work on the issue of property tax reassessments through our House task force …

I just want to be taxed fairly. Why have I been paying basically the same taxes of a house I bought in 1980’s and the newer and more luxury homes being built in the 200’s?. You place the blame on Susan Keys and the school districts, but the commissioners agreed and sign the contract several years ago. Are they now above the law, is a sign contact not valid any more? Dragging this thru the court …   more ›

Washington County Petitioning International Olympic Committee to Include Wrestling in 2020 Games

More than 100 people have signed the online petition.

Washington County is petitioning the International Olympics Committee to include wrestling in the 2020 games. "Wrestling has been a part of the Olympic Games since the modern games began, and the Greco-Roman version goes back to the ancient games," the online petition, posted on Change.org, stated. "Wrestling is one of the sports that the Olympics were built on. It is one of the sports that define what the Olympics are about." More than 100 people have signed the petition so far—and the signatures weren't just from local folks. A man from Michigan signed, as did one from the United Kingdom. News that the IOC had dropped wrestling from the 2020 lineup also prompted one local lawmaker to introduce a special resolution last month. State Rep. …

Bob, I couldn't of said it better but keep in mind that your fellow citizens of the commonwealth drank the cool aid of then Gov Rendall and approved the gambling. The Washington County Conservation District will receive a total of $83,758—the third highest amount in the state.

Washington County is one of five southwestern Pennsylvania counties to receive a large portion of a state fund set aside by Marcellus Shale drilling fees to promote local conservation efforts. “These grants will help fund the important work of county conservation districts,” state Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg, said. “Learning better ways to use and save resources while teaching stewardship to citizens is an important part of our effort to preserve and improve the environment of the region.” The grants will be dispersed from the Unconventional Gas Well Fund, created under Act 13 of 2012 to help all county conservation districts continue their services, with a special emphasis on those that host Marcellus Shale gas wells. Conservation …

As the Observer-Reporter noted but Timmy didn't, these grants are offset by budget cuts made by Gov. Corbett. It's not a good thing, especially when the impact fee money drops off and the funding hasn't been restored. How can Texas Timmy be so blind to how badly he is viewed in the public eye? Maybe he should go buy another house with taxpayer money and suck up more per diems.   more ›

Unsolved Cases: Man Found near Claysville 41 Years Ago Still Unidentified

The man's death was ruled a homicide.

An Avella resident was hitchhiking on Old Route 40 in Donegal Township, Washington County, about 9:20 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, 1972 when he spotted the badly decomposed body of a man. The man was down an embankment, about 65 feet south of the roadway. His skeletal remains were found in a briar thicket, near a small trash dump, about two miles west of Claysville. It was estimated that he had been there for about 8 to 10 weeks. The man's death was ruled a homicide, according to the Pennsylvania Missing Persons website. The man had gunshot wounds in his left torso, possibly from a .22-caliber weapon. While details about the man's appearance and clothing are many, there are no clues as to who he was, where he came from or why he died. The man …
