For that and so many other reasons, Canonsburg Mayor David H. Rhome encourages the community to attend a drug summit scheduled at Canon-McMillan High School Thursday.
Canonsburg Mayor David H. Rhome said it's time to stop sugar-coating it: Prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic. "It has no boundaries," he said. "It affects the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the famous—no one is immune." That's why Rhome said he encouraged Canon-McMillan School Superintendent Michael Daniels to bring a program about the subject to the district after they attended a similar program in Charleroi. The drug summit on prescription drug abuse was planned, and will be presented Thursday. "We have come to understand that addiction starts in the medicine cabinet," Rhome said. Employees tried to give a little bit this past holiday season.
Waste Management’s Washington Hauling site employees made it their mission to give back this holiday season. All last month, Barbara Elias, operations specialist, asked employees to bring in winter items that they no longer needed to be donated to Washington City Mission. It was no surprise to Elias that the everyone rose to the occasion. Employees brought in items such as gloves, jackets, scarves, socks, sweatshirts, hats and even a few blankets to be donated this holiday season. In total, the site was able to collect 10 boxes and bags, filled with cold-weather items to fit men, women, teenagers and children, to be donated to Washington City Mission. “I just love doing things like this,” stated Elias. “The employees really get behind our …

Pennsylvania is reporting high influenza activity in Washington County and across the state, according to the state health department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Washington County certainly isn't immune from the widespead outbreak of influenza reported by the Pennsylvania Health Department. Washington County has had 313 confirmed cases of influenza this flu season already. Nearby, the Allegheny County Health Department reports four local deaths in the last few weeks have been attributed to the influenza Type A virus. All four deaths have been patients 65 years or older, with the oldest victim 98 years old, according to Dr. Jim Lando, acting director of the department's Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As much as 3 inches of snow is expected within a 12-hour window, the National Weather Service has indicated.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Washington County area from 3 a.m. through 3 p.m. Saturday. “Light snow will overspread the area late tonight with an inch possible by dawn,” the website stated. “Light snow will continue to fall into the afternoon with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible.” Temperatures are expected to hover in the upper 20s and low 30s Saturday, according to the NWS. District Attorney Eugene A. Vittone announced Wednesday that the Washington County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force executed arrests on those suspected of dealing drugs and other controlled substances. Members of the Drug Task Force were aided by members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Washington County Adult Probation Office and the City of Washington Police Department. A total of 52 arrest warrants were signed for suspected drug dealers in the county. These defendants represent many different communities throughout the county with a significant concentration in the City of Washington. A 911 supervisor confirmed there were 14 trees and some wires down throughout the county, as the National Weather Service forecasts more rain on the way today and tomorrow.
Despite Hurricane Sandy’s descent on western Pennsylvania, a Washington County 911 supervisor said the area fared well during the first part of the storm—sustaining no major damage and no injuries. He said that, countywide, there were reports of 14 trees down, along with some wires. As of early Tuesday morning, approximately 350 Duquesne Light customers regionally were without power following Monday’s arrival of the storm. Officials said Duquesne Light crews are in the process of restoring power by removing trees and repairing downed wires. They noted: Downed wires are a safety hazard and should be avoided—they pose the danger of electrical shock and injury. Residents are advised to not drive over or go near downed wires. System …
