A couple was reportedly assaulted Saturday night while leaving the WVU-LSU football game in Morgantown, W.Va., according to the mother of one of the victims.

Marcus Mason and his pregnant wife, Hannah, were in a car with two other people leaving the football game when a rock came through an open window, prompting a beating by several individuals, said Helen Smith, who is Hannah’s mother.

Marcus Mason suffered fractures to his face and underwent surgery yesterday at a Pittsburgh area hospital, Smith said. Hannah Mason, who is 21 weeks pregnant, suffered a bruise on her shoulder, Smith said.

Morgantown police said they are investigating the assault, which occurred near a main road that leads from Milan Puskar Stadium.

The couple is originally from Natchez, Miss., and moved to Cecil Township in Spring 2010, Smith said. She added that although the couple was rooting for LSU, they had no identifiable markings on the car.

“I think it was just random,” Smith told Chartiers Valley Patch while babysitting the Mason’s young son at their Cecil home. “I don’t think they were targeted. It was a perfect day. They were just sitting there.”

Smith said Marcus was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was later taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital for further surgery. Smith said the family expected Marcus would be able to come home from the hospital later today.

“Surgery went well, and they are hoping everything looks good,” Smith said. “The doctors just were asking ‘What did they use to do this?’ It was extremely violent. Apparently they just pushed his face (repeatedly) against the ground.”

She said West Virginia University has reached out to the family and offered any help if necessary.

“West Virginia University has been very nice in offering its assistance,” Smith said. “They want to make sure we’re OK.”

Morgantown police also said Douglas J. Lewis, 34, of Canonsburg, and Nathan Ray, 21 of Houston, Texas, suffered minor injuries during the scuffle. Police said witnesses described the suspects as white men driving a light-colored sport-utility vehicle.
