Maddie

The life of a labrador retriever is what I should be living. That magical life would be filled with long walks, playful jousts in the back yard and endless games of fetch. It is a life I am made for, but I spend most of my time in a kennel instead. I consider this my home now and there are times where you might catch me snoozing on my dog bed or with my tongue crammed inside a kong for the last vestiges of peanut butter, but there is a lot of time spent pacing, jumping up to the sky and barking because I am bored out of my beautiful black skull. It has been especially acute since my roommate Milo left many months ago to live with his new family. He was my best buddy. The chemistry between us was perfect and I have yet to find another friend like him here. The volunteers will take me to the play yard and throw a ball with me. They will put me through my paces, first asking me to sit and then to hand them my paw. I do both of these strange tasks quite well and it almost always lands me a yummy treat.I am not one of those dogs that spends all my time with my nose I the ground. Oh contraire! I pay attention and look people right in the eye. That has the power to melt hearts on occasion, but it hasn’t yet landed me in a home with a family of my own.My build is lean and strong. My coat is very short and shiny, and I am a tad bossy, but in a kennel I don’t get the direction and routine that is needed. I love to be out on a walk and I do pull quite a bit, but I respond to the proper handling and ease up on my walker when I understand and am asked to stop and sit. A lot of people ask about Labs and though I am not a purebred one, I share many of those beloved Lab characteristics, so I think you would do well to give me a chance.

Volunteer comments: Maddie is a great dog to play with. She loves to play tug of war with her toys. She is friendly with strangers and loves attention. She also knows basic commands. She is a smart girl. Maddie likes to play fetch. She will drop the ball in your hand or right beside you so you can throw it again.
