PNC in Cecil to Close its Doors Friday

State Rep. Jesse White said he personally reached out to PNC Bank officials regarding the closing after a petition circulated to keep the branch open—or at least have a meeting with residents about the closure.

The Cecil branch of PNC Bank is closing Friday—and there is still no word on what will happen to the building.

State Rep. Jesse White, D-Cecil, said that many residents he has spoken with seem to believe that another bank will move into the space in PNC's absence.

But the lawmaker said that might not necessarily be the case.

He said to the best of his knowledge, PNC owns the property. White also said that bank officials have indicated to him that they would like to retain the ATM at the location.

"My gut instinct is that the days of that building being a bank are over," he said. "But the ATM may remain."

Reached Wednesday, PNC spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said she could not comment on the future of the Cecil branch specifically.

"That is not a detail I have or can share," she said.

However, she explained that the bank has been working for the past year to make adjustments to its operations based on customer need.

She said that the decision to close branches was based on customers banking more and more online, on their mobile devices and through ATM machines.

"Unfortunately, some of those adjustments mean closures," Zwiebel said.

Still, White said many of his constituents are upset by the closure—as evidenced by a petition that garnered hundreds of signatures.

Those signing asked that PNC officials meet with residents in a public meeting and reconsider plans to shutter the branch.

And White wants people to know that because of that petition, he reached out personally to PNC Bank senior officials, who he said had no interest in such a meeting.

"In their minds, there was simply nothing to discuss," he said.

The lawmaker then added: "PNC has been purposely vague on what will happen with the building."
