'Save the Canonsburg Parade Chairs' Group Created

The Facebook group was created to revise Canonsburg Council's decision Monday to restrict the placement of Fourth of July Parade chairs to 6 a.m. the day of the holiday.

Within hours of borough council , a Facebook group called Save the Canonsburg Parade Chairs was established.

By Tuesday morning, there were almost 90 members.

“Please share our page with your friends! Let's get the word out! A petition to modify the chair restrictions will be coming soon!” a post on the page indicated.

Reached Tuesday morning, Manager Nadeen Steffey, who organized the Parade of Chairs contest the last three years, said the reaction to the news on social media sites such as Facebook, though, has been mixed.

“A lot of people say it’s not so much the chairs but the rope and the caution tape,” she said.

Steffey said she did agree with one point: That this year’s first chair being placed out on Pike on June 22 was “way too soon.”

But still others have had a different reaction.

“A lot of people are talking about the tradition of the chairs in their families—and they are saying that two weeks out is way too soon, but three hours before is a total different extreme.”

She agreed with Councilman Joe McGarry, who told council last night that the new restriction would cause a “stampede” the day of the parade.”

She added: “It will be a total cluster."

Neither borough Manager Terry Hazlett or Mayor David H. Rhome could immediately be reached for reaction Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a nonscientific poll on Canon-McMillan Patch showed Tuesday that 63 percent of readers disagreed with council's decision on the matter.
