Supervisors: It's Too Early In Negotiations To Vote On Gas Lease

North Strabane Township supervisors on Tuesday tabled a decision regarding a Marcellus Shale gas lease.

Supervisors said it was too early in the negotiation process to vote on a non-surface lease between the township and either Range Resources or Rice Drilling.

The non-surface lease would consist of 81.8 acres of property off state Route 519 - which would include the municipal building and new multi-million park.

While these leases generally include a per-acre upfront payment and percentage of any royalties, those details were not discussed publicly.

Locally, Canon-McMillan School District in 2011 signed a non-surface lease with Range Resources. school directors last week unanimously approved a five-year lease with Range Resources for non-surface Marcellus Shale drilling on district property.

The lease of more than 16.8 acres of property represents 25 parcels—which includes all district buildings and all of its fields.

The lease agreement called for a $2,900-per-acre up-front payment, as well as a 16.75 percent royalty on any gas extracted.
